This is my 5th day post-op. I came home last night. I am in a lot of pain. How long does it take for the pain to subside and I can start feeling like myself again. I know it will take a while, just wandered what others' experienced. Thanks

Wanda, I was off pain meds after 7 days. I am only 5 wks post-op so I'm no expert, but my advice would be to walk/move around as much as you can and to rest as much as you can. I was spoiled in having my mom stay with me for the first 2 wks after surgery so I could focus just on rest & recovery. She did my laundry & housework in addition to taking care of my kids and allowed me to focus on feeling better. Is there someone who is a support for you? I think that's really important. WLS causes some major life changes and you have to have the time to adjust, heal, and take care of yourself.

Wanda, I am 10 weeks post-op and i had open rny and i HURT all the time till about 5 weeks out. The more I walked the better I felt. I was given liquid loratab (SP??) for the pain and it helped but I also had a lot of help...I stayed at my mothers house till I was 3 wks out. She did so much for me and my 6 year old son. Just keep your head up and keep walking...it will get better!!

Hey, Girl! Barged in the KY room today and saw your post. Your pain will get pain each and every day! WALK WALK WALK. That is the key to getting the soreness out. I think about you everyday and hope things are going okay for you. I can't wait to see you and the progress you will have made! Hang in there. It's going to be so much better! Love ya, Kits

Hi, Wanda. I am almost 4 weeks post-op and this past week was the first time I could get out of bed by myself without pain! Like everyone else has said, walk as much as you can. I walked with a cane in one hand and pillow pushed into my side with the other hand. I should've walked more but the pain was so bad, I didn't pu**** I went back to the surgeon after 3 weeks of pain and he gave me a shot of cortisone into the painful side and it helped a lot in just 2 days. I don't have any pain now so it will get better. I know it is hard to wait, but give it a few more days. Take your pain meds as long as you need to. My Dr. said that's what they are for so don't be afraid to take them. Good luck!

Wanda, I do hope by now you are being relieved of your pain. I am having a lot of trouble getting my fluids down and I know how important they are. Also, I hate eating times. I just wish I didn't have to eat. That sounds funny coming from me. I am basically pain free and my soreness is almost gone. For that I am very thankful. I can get in and out of the bed by myself and basically, I can pretty much do for myself. Of course, my house is being neglected, but I'll have someone come in and take care of that soon. Let me hear from you.
