I saw Dr. Shina on 6/15/2004 and today got a surgury date of 8/9/2004. I will be private as I have been denied twice in the past year. Hope I am doing the right thing and am starting to get nervous. I will be having open. Can anyone guess at the recovery time? I will be in hospital 4 to 5 days and then 120 miles from hospital. My famly doctor is very supportive and lives close by. Being an CCU and ER RN I know risks and all that probably too well. Has anyone had Dr. Shina and do you have a drain when you come home?

Hi Roberta, I am also having open RNY. My surgery is June 25 with Dr. Shina's associate Dr. David Gellar. I'm looking at one week from TOMORROW. I am getting somewhat antsy. Do you work at the Ohio County Hospital? Who is your family doctor? Mine is Dr. Eme.

Hello, My name is Randall Herald and I am scheduled to have Open Rouen Y procedure next Friday the 25th by Dr. Mark Shina. All of his patients usually stay in hospital 4 to 5 days after surgery. Dr. Shina really wants people to take 6 weeks to recover. You will probably be able to go back to work before the 6 weeks but he told me spend the 6 weeks getting use to your new lifestyle. I am at 442 and he stated me off 9 weeks including surgery. I making an educated guess that you will go home with a drain and then they will remove drain and clamps 1 week Post OP/Check out(Not sure which) Trust me the closer it gets the more nervous and excited you become.
