I am so worried. I called them to ask if they pay for this surgery. They immediately said "no". Is there any need to try to go on and hope they change their mind? Anyone else have dealings with this insurance co?

Rita, I don't have BC/BS but I would get my copy of the policy and see what it says about this type surgery. I have read on here that other people have called the insurance company and been given the same reply as you and then when the paper work was submitted, they were approved. Sorry, I don't know more.

Thanks Barb, all the info I can get, the better. It's just awlful, you finally decide to make that journey and get shot down by the insurance co. I will go ahead and get all my paperwork done and get it submitted...then we'll just see.

I didn't have BC/BS when I had the surgery...but I do now. And, in our policy it states that they do not cover any type of morbid obesity treatment. I would still try to get it covered and if they turn you down...fight it.

Rita,, At the top of page, click on the insurers tab. you will find out about the insurance co. I'm sure you will find your co. in there somewhere. Also, you can see how others deal with their insurance companies. Hope this helps. Linda

I have this insurance and they pre-approved me. I had my surgery 4-12-04. They are correct that they don't cover morbid obesity but they DO cover this surgery if it is "medically necessary." The only thing they required of me was a psych eval, a nutritional consult, and a surgeon consult. Feel free to email questions to me, if you have any. Good luck.

Rita I also have Blue Access PPO and was told the same thing you were, but they told me that even though they will not cover anything else that pertains to obesity that they do cover this surgery. There is rumor that they are going to discontinue coverage though but as of last week it had not happened yet. They recommended to me to get a surgery date as soon as possible in case the rumor was true but they had not been notified of any changes yet.The person I talked to also told me that my coverage would stay the same until it was time for renewal of our company policy. thanks Kim...our company just renewed. Hope it hasn't changed on mine yet. Will find out soon and probably have a fight on my hands...
