My father had a friend who passed away last week after gastric bypass. He didn't know any details but is trying to talk me out of going through with my revision. I was wondering does anyone know the cir****tances regarding his death? I don't know his name, I do know he lived in Georgetown, was the father of 5 was in his early 50's, and that his wife had had the surgery before he did. I would like to know who his surgoen was, which hospital etc. Any info would be helpful. Thanks

My father told me his name but I forgot. Dad knew him through my brothers football. He was the announcer. Dad talked to him frequently and we live in a small town so they saw each other pretty often and would talk to each other for a while when they ran onto him. My fahter went to the funeral and said that everyone was kind of whispering about the fact that he died as a result of the surgery but know one (beside the family) knew the details and obviously he wasn't going to ask the grieving family the details. I just thought someone may have know him or his wife through the support groups and may have the info.

Hello, I guess I am a little with Delores of you asking who it is when you state that it was your own fathers friend. But it is no secret and I don't know why they were whispering at the funneral home. Everybody at the funneral home should have known why and how he died. A man did die last week from results of a blood clot that he got after having the RNY in April. The exact same thing that David Bloom, the war newsman who died at the beginning of the war. He like all of us knew the risk going into the surgery. It is true his wife had the surgery last fall and was very successful. I didn't know the people and I don't even live in Georgetown, but there are no big secrets about his death. But you might want to know that the Doctors did everything they could. It was just one of those things that happen, even getting minor surgery you can have these problems. Did your father mention that both the Surgeons and their staff attended the funneral and that they were devasted since they had had no deaths until this one. Did your father tell you that even driving down the road that we can be here one day and not the next...... I'm sorry to be so down about your question, but I don't know why we love to hear the bad stuff. If you are thinking about getting a revision, I would sugguest to talk to your surgeon and let them explain all the risks that you will take and then you need to decide what is best for you. Don't let someones death stop you from changing your life. If you do, you might be waiting a long time......

Hi Shannon...well, it looks like the other two ladies have kind of answered your question...I don't agree with the tone of their messages...they seemed a little harsh and you were just asking a question...all kinds of messages get posted on here and yours didn't seem out of the ordinarry I would have asked too. Have a great day and don't shy away from the board. I, like you too I'm sure, find this a valuable tool in my WLS journey. Talk to your dad and make sure he understands what's right for you and the risks involved with this and any other surgery and stress the benefits you will gain from being healthy! My dad had to watch a blod clot that formed in his left arm after having surgery for colon cancer...I'm not batting an eye lash as to wether or not i will continue with my surgery scheduled June 9th...I will just take precautions to avoid getting blood clots, etc. Good luck and happy thougts, Michelle

michelle, why are you saying my message was har**** was not and you need to read it again. I was simply asking how come he was her father's friend but her father didn't know the name.i know all my friends names. Don't you? Simple question. I wanted to know too who the man was. If you have a problem with me, email me privately. Until then stop reading stuff into my message that was not there. that is what causes trouble on the boards. If I seem offended by what you wrote, I am.

Michelle, I'm sorry that my post offended you and Delores did not say anything out of the way It is me that was harsh and I don't regret anything that I said. The fact that she lives in the town that the man died, gives the impression that someone wants to stir up problems. Why would she post on a state wide message board for an event that happened in her own hometown? WHY? Michelle this is a serious operation, she is planning on a revision so someone down the road has not done something right. Make sure that whoever your surgeon is has a great track record. Make sure that they have given you a through exam and don't let anyone touch you without making sure you are in good health for this surgery. That includes your heart, blood pressure and a good physical exam.

Can't we all just get along????? If this is bothering you, find out more of the details, and make sure your father is not just trying to scare you out of this. The earlier post are correct, we are not for sure what tommorrow holds for us, Just get out there and do the best with what we have and pray to GOD that everything will turn out fine. We all have to die someday and if god sees fit for it to happen it don't matter how we go, BECAUSE IN THE END ,"WE ARE STILL DEAD" Chin up, belly forward and march on soldier!!!!!!

As awesome as any surgeon can be, there are risks with any surgery, and WLS in particular. Unfortunately, yes, a patient passed away. It's horrible and awful but it's also something that statistically will happen at some point to someone. I hate it. I wish everyone could have that chance for a new life, but there are problems that can happen, even if every precaution is taken. I know the surgeons did everything above and beyond to ensure the patient's health and safety. For me, I guess I feel like this: I knew when I signed my papers that there were risks involved. But I knew too, without any doubt whatsoever, that if I did NOT have surgery, I would die from my weight comorbidities. And the kind of "life" that I had was not really "living".... So, I took the risk. Because for me, I'd have rather died with hope for the future than at home, fat and miserable and hopeless. Kat
