I went to a nutrition and was told I could not have diet drink (only crystal light)
I could not use a straw when I drink?
I could not drink milk?
I could not drink coffee?
Look on back of all labels and be sure it has no sugar and fat free.
What do you mean by "diet drink" ? Are you talking about Pop/Soda?
If so, then yes, it is true that you should not have soda after the Roux N Y. It's not good for you and the carbonation can irritate and/or inflate the pouch uncessarily.
The straw also can cause gas to get into the pouch and it can be very uncomfortable and also stretch out the pouch, so yes, no more straws.
The reason Milk is not a good choice is because it is high in sugar and fat. The best milk substitute out there is Carb Countdown milk.
You can have decaff coffee. Caffiene is a stimulant and should be only an occassional treat.
Yes, you have to be very diligent about reading labels. The surgery is just a TOOL. You have to be proactive in your own health, take an active part in learning what foods are not good choices and how to read and understand labels. It's not hard but it does require your active participation in your good health.
Now, there are many alternatives out there for products like Milk...so don't feel you're being deprived.
Sugar and high fatty foods are what cause us to get fat in the first place, so yes, you must avoid those foods. Sugar can also cause dumping, which is a side effect of the Roux N Y. Very uncomfortable. However, there are many products out there now for those on restricted sugar, so you will have plenty of choices.
This surgery is just one part of the process. It requires each patient to be committed and educated and dedicated to their own health, willing to work at it, along with the surgery tool, toward the goal of losing weight.
