Anyone have experience with Dr. Shina?

Has anyone had surgery with Dr. Shina in Louisville? I am going to the seminar on April 27 and just wanted to know what to expect. I am interested in Lap RNY, but I think he only does Open RNY, is this true?

I was curious as well so I looked it up on his website. (www.louisvillebariatric.com) Here is a quote from there: DR SHINA IS NOW SEEING PATIENTS WHO ARE INTERESTED IN LAPAROSCOPIC GASTRIC BYPASS. Looks like he does LAP in some cir****tances.

Hello! I went to Dr. Shina's seminar on Tues, 3 Feb 04 and it is true he has not started doing lap bands yet. Out of the 7 patients that were there, there were only 2 of us that were wanting the lap band. He talks almost all about the RNY, because that is what he has been doing and still really trust the most. When during my private consultatation I told him that I was still wanting the lap band (NOT the RNY) then he asked me if down the road after I was approved through my insurance would I mind his associate, Dr. Geller, doing it and I said that was fine. Now I have gone through all the pre-surgical testing and evaluations and my insurance seems to be covering, so now I am just waiting until they start doing them at Norton's Suburban Hospital. Originally I was told it might be April, but I am not quite sure when it will be now. It is my understanding that there are other patients that are waiting, also. But I don't know how many. Nancy at Dr. Geller's office is the one that I always talk to about the procedure. I hope this information helps you!

Hi Micah!! I am a patient of Dr. Shina... and he does prefer to do open. Dr. Gellar does lap. I had my surgery on Feb. 26th and I feel fantastic!! Which ever dr. you choose I would be more than happy to help you any way I can. It is a long road... but the well worth the travel!! Carol

I am a patient of Dr. Shina's and would like to say that he is a great doctor. I too wanted the lap band but ended up with the open RNY because my insurance would not pay for the lap band.
