Help Marchers, I am still freakin out!!??!!-Sometimes.
Hello Marchers,
I know that I want to have the RNY, but I wonder can I have it reversed, if it does not work? If I am too sick, I also scared if something goes wrong with my health, I just do not know what to think or do, and the next minute I am totally okay, do any of you know of anyone that has the surgery about 10-15 years ago, I would like to know how they are doing, I just need some encouragement.
Thanks
Tori
Tori,
I don't think they will reverse it. I think it can be reversed depending upon which surgery you have. I had the open RNY. It is natural to be scared but if you are a serious about the surgery, your Dr. is the best person to tell you. I don't know of anyone who had the surgery that long ago. The surgery that they do now is better developed than 15 years ago. I think after you have the surgery, you will not want it reversed. You will feel so much better.

Tori,
I am pretty sure that if you have RNY it is NOT reversable. I had my surgery Jan 23rd. and I had your same doubts. I am still going through the why did I do this phase. But then I actually sit and think about how I feel and how I used to feel and there is a big difference. It has only been a little over a month and I have lost 49lbs. I feel so much better. I am still really fatigued and even had a return trip to the hospital last week because I got sick and it made me dehydrated. You will go through the good and the bad.
I do know someone who had the surgery about 25 years ago when it was not as common as it is now. She says other than chewing a bunch and taking little bites, she has remained healthy and active for 25 years. She still looks great too! If you are unhealthy and feel bad, give it another thought. Even though I am going through a withdrawl/crazy
period, (which is normal by the way) It was still worth every minute of the surgery. Email me if you need another pep talk!!!

The lap-band is the procedure most often reversed.
However, Dr. G. Derek Weiss at Georgetown Bariatrics Community Hospital is able to reverse the procedure.
For the record, I was as scared as you are now prior to 9-4-03 RNY. There are two periods of adjustment, one - when you learn how (not) to eat solid foods again, and two - when you learn the rules of the pouch at 6 mos. postop.
We are all different. Your weight loss may be fast, mine is slow. So what? I'm an older lady whose body couldn't take the rapid loss, anyway. It's tempting to think "lose the weight and revert to former habits". It won't be that way; it is your tool for life. This is the good news. What would you want to reverse? Would you want the obesity back again? I know you wouldn't. The resultant health issues can be dealt with. We have a great weekly support group Fridays 10:00 a.m. at Georgetown Bariatrics Community Hospital off I-75 So. in Georgetown, Ky.; come join us anytime!
Believe me, I was white-eyed the day of my surgery. Now I'm so protective of my WLS pouch you'd think that it was my child!!! You will be, too. Keep us posted.
