Protein question
I'm 7 weeks post op today. I don't feel I'm losing as good as I should, but I'll take what I can get. According to MY scale, I've lost a total of 38 pounds (I was hoping for 50 by now). However, I last went to the doctor on July 28 and my scale weighed a little heavier than Dr. Gellar's.
I think a BIG part of my problem is protein. I drank 2 protein drinks (Unjury) a day faithfully the first 2 weeks post partum. After that, the thought of drinking them literally made me nauseated. I tried protein bars - they gave me dumping, so I drank skim milk to get some extra protein. I finally have found a protein drink I LOVE - Nectar (go to www. wlssuccess.com). I got the Apple Ecstasy. It's only 90 calories and has a whopping 23 grams of protein in 1 scoop/8 oz water! Since I got it (which was only Tuesday because I was on vacation when it arrived) I've had 16 oz a day, but I actually would like another 8 oz some nights.
My question in this whole long story is - can you take in too much protein? I've got a lot of protein grams to "make up" since I was without it for approximately 4-5 weeks. Do you think this is ok? I'm hoping this will also boost my rate of loss. Does this count in the 64 oz/day of water?
Thanks for your responses. Laurie
Laurie, first congrats on your weight loss. That is great. Next, I don't think we are able to "make up" protein. I just found out that we need 60-80 g. protein per day. I had been lucky to get 40. SOOOOOO now I am doing two shakes a day. I buy the pre-mixed or powdered EAS Advantage Edge at Walmart and while it is not very tast, it is tolerable. Good luck.
Laurie,
I just wanted to thank you for the info about nectar protein drinks. I am just beginning my pre surgery diet and the nutritionist told me to find a drink that i liked or learn to like one. The thought of the powdered protein shakes literally made me nauseous. When i read your post, I got online and ordered some samples so that I could find which I liked best. I actually believe that I can drink any of them with no problem. They really are much more tasty than the thick mixes. Thanks again.
