I am 1 week post-op and I'm starving!! I'm doing my protien drinks and getting my fluids in, but I am still starving! I've eaten popscicles, jello, and pudding until it's coming out my ears, but it seems like just a few minutes after eating this sort of stuff, my stomach is growling again! I am open to any suggestions or help!

What kind of surgery did you have?

A lot of people experience what's referred to as "head hunger" after weight loss surgery.  That means that you're not actually physically hungry, but your mind thinks you are.  Try to keep your mind on something other than food.  After my surgery, I read all the time.  I had purchased a set of five books and read them all during my recovery.  I was so engrossed in the story that I didn't think that much about food!

When will you be allowed to start soft foods?  I was able to eat things like fat-free cottage cheese, fat-free refried beans, fat-free yogurt, and the solids strained out of canned soup pretty soon after surgery.  Those will definitely stay with you longer than the things you're eating right now.

Good luck to you!

I had gastric banding, the Realize band to be specific.

Right now I am on phase 2, which is low-fat full liquids, protien drinks, milk, sugar free popscicles, SF jello, SF pudding, strained soups (no chunks), thinks like that.  I can have anything that is the consistency to drink it through a straw.

I will admit, that head hunger has always been a battle of mine, but this isn't head hunger. My stomach is growling so loudly, people in stores are giving me strange looks.

Oh man Leanne you nailed that one...it's like having an angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other.  It doesn't get any easier either....I fight it every day.  sigh...so I gotta get tough!!

It will get better the farther out you get.  It takes some time to get used to eating almost nothing!
I also liked the Laughing Cow cheese cubes....they were soft and easy for me to eat.
Seems like I have a post on my blog from April 2008 ....  I made a list of things I could do other than eat.  Helps to battle head hunger....which I still struggle with.

Hang in there and it will get better.
It's worth it.

Hi Danielle!
I have not had my surgery yet, but it sounds like you have no restriction which I imagine is really tough!  I encourage you to also visit the Surgical Forums for advice.  I haven't spent any time on the Realize band board, but the ladies on the Lap-Band forum are fabulous and have been a ton of support for me.
I also think finding something else to focus your mind on might help....that's what I've been trying to do on the liver-shrinking diet, and so far it helps.
Good luck!

Hi Danielle and welcome to the Ky forum!!  first always remember that being a week out it's very important to follow the rules..for medical reasons.  and I have to tell you a little secret.  I am 6..going on 7 years out from RNY..and to this day I cannot touch popsicles, jello or pudding..I try in the summer thinking sf cold popsicles sound so good, then I end up throwing the darn things out...so I know how you feel about being sick of them!!..but hang in there your doctor knows what he is doing...this phase is shorter though it seems forever, it will pass.  Then you will be joining on these types of post telling newbies what you went through.   I found it helpful to keep a journal.  Not really a food journal but a journal about my feelings, emotions and the different experiences.  it was interesting week by week to go back, look at what I wrote the week before and how much things were already changing.  to look back and read those emotions now.  I have never shared that journal with anyone.  But there was a time I spoke at meetings as well as classes with Dr. Sonnanstine where he allowed me to share my own experiences.  This helped me grow.  See if you can find a support group if not..ask here who lives near you and see if they want to meet up to just sit and chat.  it helps soooo much.
Thanks for posting..please keep doing it..what you write brings experience back into the forum and certainly enlightens those coming after ...
Good luck..you will do great..remember, it's all about you...this is the one time in your life you allowed to be self centered!!!!!!
