Hi, My name is Billie and I'm currently at 391lbs.  I have Sleep Apnea,Type2 Diabetes, High Blood Pressure...etc...  My doctor is fully recommending the Lap Band surgery, but I have no insurance.  Due to my status, no kids, not disabled, or blind or over 65, I am also not qualified to receive a Kentucky Medical card.

My question is this.....   I had recently been told by many people that they know or know of someone who was in a similar situation as I am and they received a "spend down" medical card.  Apparently, they found a surgeon who was willing to do the surgery and after the surgery was completed, the patient applied for this kind of medical help.  there is some paper work in order to receive it to be done and I'm fine with that..   I just need a place to start.  Is there anyone that knows of anything like this? Or can point me to a place where I can start to find out?

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!!

Thanks!

Hey Billie!

I recently had some procedures done for female issues and also have no insurance.  Ky medicaid will pay a percentage of your costs based on your income and how much the procedure is in comparison to your income.  Contact your local medicaid office and ask to speak to someone about a spend down.  (an adult medicaid worker)  I am sure they can give you the lowdown on how this works.

Good Luck!!

OH... Thanks so much!!  MY mother and I was just talking about that.  I have to have some oral surgery and no dental insurance either and she said that she's not sure, but she thinks that I can spend so much, then get a spend down for 3 months.   because I need more than just one oral surgery.  If I could do that...then ummm maybe my doctor could PUSH me through while I have the spend down and get the surgery done?  I know.... wishful thinking I'm sure..LOL  but you never know!

A spend-down medical card works much like a regular medical card with the same criteria.  There is family medical where you have kids in the home or are pregnant, and then there is adult medical where you have to be aged (65), blind, or disabled (deemed by social security).  You won't be eligible for any of these, I've worked for the state for 8 years now.
