Back on OH board after minor bump
I had a lap RNY on August 21st. I went home on August 24th. I was doing well, attempted to get online but there was a problem with my new PC and the new CA security system I purchased, but that has been resolved. I went home with a G-drain. ON Friday August 28th I visited my regular doctor and had some blood work done. She said I should keep an eye on the largest incision I had. By Friday night that incision had turned extremely red, painful and the redness had spread to over 1.5 inches around the incision. I called my surgeon who sent me to the emergency room, and they put me on an antibiotic called Levaquin. I started taking it in the emergency room and filled the prescription on the way home. I was in the surgeon's office on Tuesday and he removed all the staples and the drain. He said he may have to lance the one incision that was still very painful and red and had a lump in it. By Wednesday I was feeling really bad. I had 'jello' in my abdomen. I felt very sick, carried a low grade fever, and all the incisions or puncture wounds were very red and the drain hole and one other incision was looking nasty. The surgeon put me into the hospital to be on antibiotics by IV. I also received a B-1 shot, a B-12 shot and was still on the blood clot shots that I was giving myself. They gave me very strong antibiotics. I was on ice chips from the time I entered the hospital on Wednesday afternoon through Friday evening. They did a cat scan to make sure things were okay while in ER and they found some sort of object in the large intestinal area close to the colon and appendix. They did abdomenal series and you could see this small object. They cleaned me out with an enema and magnesium citrate. On Friday morning they did another abdomenal series and an upper GI to make sure I had no leaks. They also did the upper GI the day after surgery. There are no leaks, but still something, a 'pill' or something in my lower intestine. Cleaning me out did not move it. So the surgeon is having all the tests checked out. I will go back to see him in 2 weeks and will have a colonoscopy scheduled and check out all the incisions. I left the hospital on Saturday with antibiotic prescription and a medication to help with diahrea.
I feel all this is just a little bump in the road. The last time I had an internal incision, I developed an infection and the same sort of things happened again, even with antibiotics after surgery. I am allergic to penicillan (sp?) and sulpha drughs. I don't thing Leviquin really does much for me. I am feeling so much better since the IV antibiotics! Now I can continue my journey. I weighed in the day of surgery at 239. When I visited the surgeon a little over a week later I weighed 231. When I returned home from the hospital, my scales said 244, but I do know that you gain in the hospital with the fluids and the swelling. I plan to go to the 'Y' today to walk and weigh in on their scale. It is like a doctors scale and I am sure much more accurate than what I have here at home. I would like to see what the difference my scale is to the 'Y' scale. But losing 8 pounds from the weight at the day of surgery is wonderful! If I lose 4 pounds a week, what a great way to lose weight.
I have not had trouble getting the protein in. I have not had any nausea or vomitting since the surgery. I tolerate food, chew my food until it is 'moosh' (20-30 time chewing), take small bites with my 'baby spoons', do not drink 30 minutes before and after each meal and eat until I am satisfied not 'full'. It works out to about 2.5 ounces a meal and I am sip, sip, sip on liquids between meals. This isn't as hard as I thought it would be. I have not cravings, do not wish to eat anything I am not to eat and have been trying all the samples of protein I ordered on the web. I have found that UNJURY unflavored is one of the best things I can add to just about anything I eat or drink.
Thank you everyone for suporting me before this journey started. This is a great group of people. I am on my way and am on the losers bench.

That's awesome I think a lot of people have unfortunate slip ups. I recovered relatively easy after surgery but then when I went back to work(I worked at a drug rehab center for teenagers) I caught what felt like death. I never puked and went to the bathroom so much in my entire life.
I am glad you are feeling better each day (even though sometimes it doesn't) it gets easier

Hi stranger! I was so glad to see your post. I've been thinking about you and keeping you in my prayers. I'm sorry that you hit a bit of a bump in the road, but am glad that you are doing better now. I'm impressed that you are already hitting the Y!
I look forward to reading about your continued success.

Hi Leanne!
I do not know how you went back to work so soon after surgery. I am having bouts of sluggishness and have to take a nap or two a day. I am getting all my water in and all the protein. I just cannot imagine going back yet! Maybe the bump set me back a few days, but still, I admire you for going back so soon. I have to say you are a stronger person then I am. Thank you for the supoort, thoughts and prayers.
