You are really doing yourself a disservice if you don't get educated on ALL the WLS available. Be sure to research thoroughly the DS as well.

Dr. Husted, a world reknown surgeon, is in Somerset, and that's not really far for you. I would attend one of his seminars, as they are very informative. He will lay all the options on the table, and tell you the pros and cons of each one. As far as I know, he is no longer performing the RNY, as he feels it is an outdated surgery with so-so long term results. He also has said he feels the lapband is good for someone who only has a small amount of weight to lose (around 50 pounds), and someone who is really good at dieting.

Look at the long term stats overall of each surgery. I think you will find the DS is far superior as far as total weight loss, and % of loss maintained.

Good luck.

Hmmm thats kinda got me thinking too same as Shana....is the DS the same as the "sleeve??

The sleeve is the first part of the DS. It's called the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, or VSG. The second part of the DS is the duodenal switch, whi*****ludes the malasborptive component. Go to www.duodenalswitch.com or www.dsfacts.com for explanations, and pictures more indepth than I could ever put into words for you.

Although there are no long term studies on the VSG, it has been performed as part of the DS for 20 years. There are no long term studies on the VSG as a stand alone procedure as of yet, which is why most insurance companies won't cover it, or consider it investigational.

If I weren't willing to go the route of having the full DS, I would defintely have the VSG. This would make it much easier to just add the switch part of the surgery at a later time, if you found your weight loss was not sufficient. Personally, I would go for the gusto and have the procedure done at once.

A couple of things you need to keep in mind. With the DS there is a more normal diet, as compared to the RNY or Lapband, or even VSG. You will not need to watch your fat intake, as you will only absorb ~20% of fats. With both the VSG and the RNY, in time the sleeve or pouch will relax or stretch, allowing you to eat more food. This is when a lot of people run into problems. You will not be able to rely on restriction alone. Most RNYers will need to diet to maintain the weight loss. With the DS, you will have the malabsorption to help you maintain weight loss. It is said that the sleeve helps you get the weight off, the switch helps you keep it off.

Feel free to ask anything. I may not know the answer to everything, but I'm sure I can point you in the right direction. Again, don't shy away from the DS board. Come read and see what post op life is like for the DSers. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Hello!

I chose to have RNY and am very happy with my results.  I can't speak for the other procedures but I know people who have been successful with all procedures...........and I know people who have gained their weight back with all procedures too.
Just keep in mind that the surgery is only a tool and you have to make the lifestyle change in order to keep the weight off.
It is hard at times, but so worth it!
Best of luck to you as you make your decision!

I was reading this thread and I thought I would add my opinion as well...
I have been researching WLS for the past 5 years. Originally thought I would have RNY and my Surgeon choice was Dr. Jeffery Allen. I had a previous surgery with him EVERYTHING I could read on this site as well as many others. The more I found out, the more I knew that what would be the best choice for me would be DS. I will try to highlight my reasons for you:

1. I want only one WLS surgery. I know many who have had the band or RNY, then been unhappy with their results. Initially they lost but regained of never lost enough. Many end up having a revision sown the road.
2. I want to be able to eat Sm-normal quantities of  food.
3. I have a family history of inflammatory disorders and I don't want to be forever banned from Anti-Inflammatory medications.
4. After reading all of the forums,  DSers seem to have the highest degree of long term weight loss success and are very happy with their choice. Very few if any spoken regrets.

As a RN, be assured that I have thoroughly  researched every aspect of this surgery including reading medical journals and other sources that might not be readily available to everyone. I have also researched common myths about the DS surgery.

I will address two that I was given by  Weight Loss Surgeons who don't perform DS surgery:

Some common ones are that if you have DS you can expect to have chronic diarrhea forever. This is simply not true and is an indication of a underlying problem that needs treatment.

Another one is that the DS will result in extreme malnutrition. Also not true if the recipient diligently follows the protein and vitamin regimen.

One question  I had was why are DS surgeons limited? I believe thae answer is two fold
1. More complicated surgery for not much more money.
2. Less residual care needed ie: fills.
3. No marketable medical device. Ever Realize that a lap band has a name?

on the revision board there is alot of failed bandsters,I too am researching. The bigest complait on band is they slip, constantly up keep with refills, mmm that a lot of needles poken in a port to fill the bands regular, after seeing all the failers,I,ve scraped the Idea, but you have to choose, what right for you.If you chose to look under the revision board look under  surgical forums, then revision weight loss surgery forum. It sure has me thinking a little more clear.
