I thinkthe others covered most of it.
At my size i didnt have much of a choice so it was the rny for me.
For me it has been the tool i needed to get me where i am at.
Now i work a little harder but my results are still god.
I personally feel if i dont succeed its noones fault ut my own.
It is a hard choice and you are doing the right thing by asking quesions and doing research.
Good luck sweetie

You should talk to Dr. Weiss and Dr. Oldham.  They are the best, well trained surgeons in the state.  A good surgeon will help you make the best decision for you by educating you on both surgeries.

I beg to differ with your statement. Oldham/Weiss cherry pick patients for surgery. This is pretty well known. I don't think their skills could even compare to Dr. Husted in Somerset, KY. Do some real research before you start telling people who the *best* surgeons are. BTW, ask them why they don't, read: can't, do the DS surgery.

One last thing, a good surgeon will help you make the best decision for you by educating you on ALL, not both, as there are more than two, surgeries available. I'm sure they can't educate anyone on the other surgeries, as they can't perform them.

To the OP - more surgeries exist outside the band and RNY, please do some research. Check out the VSG and DS boards while you're hear.

Hi Shana.....I have to agree that the surgery is your choice but be sure to research the surgoens.....There are alot of us that agree ours is the best but what it eventually boils down to is their skills, success ratio, and your confidence in them as your surgeon. I love my surgeon and this he is #1 in his field. I have my journey in chronology on one of my blogs on my profile. I keep it to refer back to and to see where this journey has taken me.  My surgeon has trained numerous surgeons in bariatrics as well as traveled extensively for educational and training  purposes. He is on top of all the advancements and procedures, but does not perform all of them due to preference.  If you can...go to a couple more seminars. I got a feel for a couple surgeons on whether of not I would use them just by how they dealt with the questions aske and facts they presented. I researched and asked questions for over two years or better before I decided. Good luck to you on your investigation and journey!

Hi Shana,

I think you are doing exactly the right thing.  You have to be comfortable with your decision.  This is a huge step just for you.

I thought I wanted a Band.  I went to a seminar and thought wait a minute.  I took my BFF and husband to another seminar.  There really was no question for me.  RNY with my weight and age just seemed like the better choice.  Also, I needed to have my tool do the work for me.  RNY hasn't given me many options.  I think Band will be easier later in the journey, but...  I hope that my lifestyle and healthy attitude will keep me sucessful in the long haul.  RNY has bee the right choice for me.

Go to seminar with the different surgeons, talk to people, you will make your decision.

There were several things that I considered.  The most important is that the surgeries work differently.  Both the RNY and the lap band help with portion control, but the lap band does not prevent any absorption of what you eat lke the RNY does.  The rate of weight loss is faster with RNY and that was something else that was important to me.  As a self-pay patient, I wanted to get the most bang for my buck so to speak.

I didn't like the idea of having to go in for fills with a band and the likelihood of needing additional surgery later is higher with the band than with RNY.

Even though the lap band would have been about $8,000 cheaper for me, I still went with the RNY.

It's a person choice and one that you'll want to make after you've done a lot of studying and talking over your options with your doctor.

Good luck!

I started out wanting the Lap band and only the Band. RNY was def a no no for me...until I went to a Group session one night. In the back of my head was this old thought saying..the RNY is a more dangerous surgery. After telling my doctor my thoughts...he said well..any surgery is a dangerous surgery. You never know the outcome. After thinking about it for a few days I thought..he has a point. But what really made me choose RNY over the Lap band is simply that I would find a way around the band. With the RNY you have this thing that will trigger you and give you a dumping effect where as if you drank a milkshake with the band...it'll just go straight down and you still get all the calories and fat. When it comes to food...I'm a cheater lol. Each surgery is different. You just gotta keep searching and think really really hard about each one of them. Hang around...you'll find out soon which one you think is best for you. Best of luck!

p.s. by the way you can search the surgeon up at the top of the home page and find surgeons that are close to you and which is suppose to be top of their line. Hope this helps
