Gall Bladder Attacks

Think I have been having some gall bladder issues.  Have an appt. at KDMC on the 25th.  Was told to come on in if it gets worse.

My symptoms are severe pain in the top middle section of my stomach, I roll around in pain thinking I am going to have to call 911....but then it passed, and I seem to have diahrea after I eat..........no matter what I eat for the past 2 days.

Anyone else had to have their gall bladder removed after surgery?  I know it is a common procedure.   Anyone use KDMC?  If so, did they do it outpatient or was an overnight stay required?

Hope everyone else is doing well!

I had a band 1 year ago & have lost 60 lbs.
My gallbladder started acting up about 2 months ago. I got nauseated after eating slightly fatty items, had pain in my right upper abdomen & right shoulder. The nausea & pain seemed to last 7-8 hours after eating. Sometimes I was still vomiting 8 hours after an attack. My doctor told me that during a gallbladder attack that your stomach just shuts down. This happened 5 times in a 2 week period the last 2 times it happened, I had only eaten a bite of baked chicken & broth. I was afraid to eat anything after that.
I did have my gallbladder out laprascopic as an outpatient. I was only at the hospital 3 hours total. It was mildly uncomfortable (simular feeling as doing 100 situps) for only 2-3 days.  I went back to work 4 days later. All of the symptoms went away immediately after surgery.
My Dr said that is important to get it checked as soon as possible when having symptoms because untreated it could lead to pancreatitis.
I am not sure if this is true with RNY, but I had to make sure that they did not put a nasogastric tube into my stomach during surgery due to being banded. I just made sure I told everyone associated with my surgery & they also wrote it on the front of the chart.
Good luck to you. I really thought it was an easy surgery.

Thanks Laura.
Hope mine goes as smoothly as yours.  I know it is a matter of time and I will have to break down and go!
I am delaying the inevitable I think!

Hey Leslie, I actually had to have my gall bladder out before I had surgery. I started having those same pains in 2004 while I was in the army. They kept telling me it was acid reflux and not to worry about it. The pain would come in spells... some months nothing... other months every other day it seemed like I was hurting. And the pain was absolutly debilitating. Try telling your squad leader you cant come to work because you feel like you are having a heart attack... so they ran tests on my heart and everything always came back normal (not the best health care in the army). So fast forward to May 2006, been suffering through that pain for about two years and I'm deployed at this time mind you to the middle of Iraq. I start passing out at random times beause the pain in my chest is so bad... I am rushed to the ER (well tent with ER docs) and again, nothing wrong with you... just have acid reflux... but my blood work comes back... going into liver failure... not good... do a scope of my upper GI and NO acid damage... no acid reflux... not good... still don't know what is causing my liver and now kidney failure. A new doc is on base and decides to use a sonogram machine from like the stone age... and is able to see that I have HUGE gall-stones. Need to get evac'd ASAP! Land in Germany 24 hours later for emergency surgery at Landstul. Gall Bladder taken out lap-way, only a few small incisions and a HUGE bruise around my belly button where they took it out. Next day wake up... liver and kidneys are normal, no sick feeling and NO pain in my chest! Spent the next three weeks in Germany recovering during the World Cup! So long story short, get your Gall-Bladder checked out... waiting too long can lead to big problems!!!!

Good Luck!

Leslie,

I had my gallbladder out before surgery at KDMC. Dr. Tompkins did my gallbladder surgery and it was outpatient. I think I was at the hospital less than 4 hours total. Hope everything goes well for you!

HI Leslie,
Sorry your having gallbladder issues! It's definately NOT fun!!!
I had mine out years ago.. My pain would radiate from upper abdomen and straight through to the back! It's miserable...
Keep a very bland diet for the next few days untill you can get in to see DR... No fried foods, Tomatoe based foods cause of the acid in tomatoes, no alcohol, Just keep it bland... HOpefully they'll get you in and you'll be feeling fine in no time!!
My surgery was also outpatient and done laproscopically!
Keep us posted
