Does Humana PPO Optimum need 6 months of diet recordings with a physician...do they need to be CONSECUTIVE?  My husband has dec, jan, april, may, june, july.  he skipped february and march.

That's the program I have (retired teacher here) and yes, they required 6 consecutive months of doctor supervised dieting.  I missed a month and had to start all over.  So it took me from Feb. 2008 to Dec 2008 before I was able to actually have the surgery.  I hope they've changed that since I went through it for his sake, but I doubt it.  Call to check and make sure.

Good luck!

He has 8 months but inside those 8 months there is two missed months of weigh ins.  His doctor is writing a letter saying he was under a supervised diet the whole time even though he did not weigh in for two months.  Ha ha ha ...i don't know if that is going to fly or not.  What do you think?  Did your doc try that for you?  We are in Frankfort and have the humana ppo optimum so don't know if there is any difference or not.  But, you know what...I saw their actual bylaws and it states for wls you need 6 months supervised wt loss....no where was the word consecutive written.  I am wondering about that missing word.

My surgeon's office workers knew my insurance program thoroughly and they were able to tell me right away that it was consecutive - I could have kicked myself for missing the one month.  I just started again and made sure my appointments were scheduled by the middle fo the month instead of waiting til the last minute so I wouldn't end up with the doctor out of town or something to make me miss my monthly appointment.

I have the Humana PPO Optimum too -the one we pay the most for so we can get the most benefits.  But the good news was the moment I had my months in and the papers were submitted Humana acted quickly - we had approval back within 36 hours.

Good luck!

What a total bummer....i just found out Humana requires COE to approve wt. loss surgery at a hospital.

Are you saying "Center of Excellence" for the COE?  If so and you have the state health insurance, you do NOT have to go to a COE.  However, I would personally recommend a center of excellence.  That just shows that the hospital has performed more surgeries and is committed to WLS.  In you are in Frankfort, the Georgetown hospital is a COE.  I had surgery there and would highly recommend that hospital.  The staff is wonderful.  The entire hospital is geared to "heavy patients" (wider chairs, bigger beds, etc).  Also, my family was impressed by the fact that while I was in surgery, the hospital came around with a drinki/snack cart for all family members.

I would contact Humana at the number on the back of your card.  Once you get the voice response system, there is an option that either says "ActiveHealth or Why Weight KY or Disease Management/Wellness".  Select that option.  This will get you in touch with ActiveHealth, which is the company that is contracted by Humana to perform all disease management programs and approve WLS.   They can tell you for sure if your husband has to start over.  I want to say he does not, but I don't want to say that for sure.

Good luck
Sharley
