WANTING RNY
That's great you would like to have the surgery. It's such a life changer.
A few things to do before you settle on anything. Research, research, research. Talk to other patients, talk to your doctor or a second one. Seriously discuss it with family and friends because that support is so important the first few weeks after surgery especially when you are sick of liquids
.
When you actually get a surgery date jump on here and ask everyone what helped them get through recovery at the hospital (for example your pillow versus the hospital, ear plugs, chap stick etc) and at home(magazines, books, arm weights for when you are a little sore to move everything around, movies etc)
It's such an exciting and interesting journey. Good luck

I literally have a check off list that I made up for myself, my husband, my mother-in-law(all of us were banded by Dr. Sonnanstine) and my two cousins(one was done by Dr. Curry(she is a patient of Dr. Sonnanstine now though) and the other was done by a Dr. in Illinois) for at home and hospital essentials. So when you get closer let me know and I will e-mail it to you.
My husband says that I was way way too prepared for my surgery but according to him I am more organized than most military operations and Martha Stewart combined and I have such a perfection complex that had I left one thing behind I would have begged Dr. Sonnanstine to let me run home and retrieve said missing item. He's just jealous for example he was so organized that when we moved into our new house three weeks ago, that a month before that he thought he would be helpful and pack some of his belongings yeah he sure did he packed all of his socks and underwear and couldn't remember what box they were in. So he had to go to Wal-mart at midnight because he had no underwear for work the next day. I was amused

Do you think you could send that check list to me, my surgery is on 9-9 with Dr Sonnanstine :D

Having the surgery is a big decision.
I can tell you what it has done for me.
I was terified at the thought of having surgery so i kept putting it off and off and getting bigger and bigger.
Til 1 day i couldnt walk or breath and i weighed 526 and i was told i was dying so i put my trust in the one person who had faith in me Dr.SONNASTINE and he has given me my life back and it is so much better i can walk hell i can run(alittle) i am self sufficent again ,my biggest regret is why didnt i do it sooner i have missed so much with the kids.
I have alot to lose still but i feel 95% better and if i dont lose anymore i am okay with that.
I can tell you do your research and attend a couple of seminars my first i didnt care for the surgeon and decide to move on go with who makes you comfortable.
Wish you luck in your decisions

You need to be in the right frame of mind, and decide you want to change your life, I wanted the surgery for years and insurance wouldn't pay for it, then a different one finally did, I would have it done again tomorrow, I am not saying it is life changing, you are still the same person on the inside. but I feel better, off most medicines I was on. I find clothes that fit better, I am always getting compliments, and people not knowing me, no more snoring!!!
now a couple of cons about the surgery, I still feel fat sometimes, I have alot of loose saggy skin, especially, my lower stomach, inner thighs, upper arms, I have bat wings now, my chin is really loose, but better than a double chin!! right?? saggy boobs, but I already had them, they are just flabbier now. I don't drink sodas anymore, I can tolerate almost anything I eat now, it has been 1 1/2 years almost. Now just like before surgery, I have to watch every bite I put in my mouth, and I haven't lost any weight in 5 months!! I get hungry now also. first year was a breeze about eating. The first month after surgery was hard, I had a stitch that was sewn to something inside of me, until it broke lose I was in constant pain, and couldn't stand up straight.
I never threw up until about 6 or 7 months after surgery, so you have to take the good with the bad. I hope this helps you in your decision, you can always e-mail me if you have other questions!!!

I just had my RNY surgery last week, but first met with a weight loss surgeon five years ago. Between then and now, I tried everything to lose the weight on my own. Surgery was truly the last option for me, and I feel very much at peace knowing that I tried very hard to lose it with diet and exercise first.
Here's what I would recommend you do:
1. Research, research, research. Know what your options are and the risks/benefits of each. There are several weight loss surgeries available to you and you will want to talk with your doctors about which is right for you.
2. Find a doctor that you feel comfortable with. For me, I wanted a surgeon that had the right combination of technical skills and interpersonal skills. I also wanted to have the surgery close to home, so that was another factor. I met with several surgeons before I picked mine.
3. Prepare yourself mentally for how much your relationship with food is going to change. You can do that by reading some great books on the subject and/or see a therapist who has some expertise in this field.
4. If you decide this is the right thing for you to do, don't let anything stand in your way. My insurance doesn't pay for any weight loss surgery at all, so I had to find a way to pay for it myself. I believe that it will be one of the best investments I've ever made.
Good luck to you. Since last Monday, I've already lost 25 pounds! I'm so happy to be on the journey to good health.
