Hi, I had my surgery in Feb. I don't know if the extra time off is needed. Depends on you. I worked the day before to keep my mind off of it. The hospital stuff. Most important is the chapstick. The slippers for walking the hall. I did use my robe for walking the halls. I changed into my pajamas the 2nd day. Oh... big girl panty to slip over the binder. It made me feel better to have something on. I did want/need my husband to spend both nights. I packed a bunch of stuff I didn't use; earplugs, magazine, books. You will just need the basics.

who would have thought of earplugs? what a great idea!!! depending on where your room is it can get noisy.
I worked up to the day before as well. I would have been more on edge hanging out at home. working kept my mind off things.
I wore a hospital gown because of IV tubing and such.
robe, slippers, usual stuff like hair brush..tooth brush..etc. depending on your doc you can probably take a shower the day after.
good luck!!!!! you will do just fine.

Hey Sandi
One things I might suggest:
***a typed list of people and numbers to have someone call regarding your surgery
*** maxi pads as many people (myself included) have their cycle start due to surgical stress and you do not want to try and mess with tampons
***a camera to take pictures if you want....I did not, kinda wish I did. (oh and take your befores - as well as before measurements)
I took my nano, make up, and a book- none of which I used.
I did not take any extra time off- I was not stressed, felt solid and prepared
have fun and good luck

Sandy, you will love Dr Tanner!! He just done my RNY on May 7th.
As for what to take to the hospital, I way over packed LOL... This is what I actually used. The day before with the bowl prep I really appreciated the baby wipes that I had! I used them while I was in the hospital too to wipe my face and freshen up, chap stick, pj pants for walking the halls ( I was in a hospital gown the whole time), my tooth brush, deodrant, hair brush and hair tie, my pillow and slippers. You will also appreciate the pillow for the ride home.
Good luck and welcome to the losers bench.

My #1: My PILLOW!! I can't sleep on others.
By day 2, I showered and was in my own pj's. I felt more comfortable. I forgot my shampoo, but the hospital had some.
Other than that, slippers (good for walking the halls) and a light robe. I didn't use my makeup until the day I went home.
I did play around with my cell phone a lot. Games and such, but other than that, I couldn't really concentrate on anything to read. I didn't listen to music. I didn't even watch TV. I mostly just kind of dazed and dozed for 4 days.....
If it were me, time off before the surgery would increase my stress. I am a stay at home mom and those days before the surgery were tough. I had to invent things to keep me busy...

I had open rny surgery with Dr. Bolar in Georgetown back in 2003. I lost weight for the first 3 months and my beginning weight was 326. I now weigh 280. The follow up care was bad, I could eat a six inch sub after three months, so surgery basically failed for me. I am thinking about revisional surgery. This time with Dr. Sonnanstine. I wonder what vitamins he gives or recommends? Email me if you know. Thanks, Pat
