First support meeting last night at Suburban!
My friend and I went to the support meeting at Suburban last night. This was my first support meeting and I enjoyed hearing everyone's progress and experiences. I met people both with lapbands and RNY.
I want to share an observation with you - mind you this is my personal opinion. I've heard some discontent with a certain surgeon and that some of his patients are going to a different doctor for their aftercare. From what I have read and researched, this is a very competent surgeon, but his aftercare leaves something to be desired. I thought about this and have decided that perhaps some people need more hand-holding and guidance than others. I feel this doctor is a very good 'technical' surgeon, VERy good in his field of expertise. I am thinking perhaps once he has given the tool to his patients, he sees it as their journey, with him as a 'consultant' if you have questions or concerns, but the journey is a personal and private journey each person takes. Once the doctor has given you the tool, yes, he is interested in how you are doing, but not to the point of being overly concerned if you are using the tool wisely and all your labs are good. He has completed his task, as the surgery goes, and perhaps he is more a great surgeon than he is a great 'doctor'. We each come to this decision with a certain set of expectations. I hope we all reach our goals and become healthier, but for me, I want a surgeon who is one of the best to give me the tool. Once I've been given the tool, it is up to me to make this journey a journey to success and only I can do that for me.
I haven't written this to hurt anyone's feelings, just to share my opinion and how I see my journey. I'm not attempting to make anyone mad or upset, as we each have to make our own decisions for ourselves. We have to take care of ourselves. I can only take care of me and what I need and will or will not change. With guidance and understanding, research and questions, I will attempt to be the success with the tool and go in the successful direction with the information I am given. I am still learning about the tool, what happens to those of you who have the tool and I want to be an inspiration as so many others have been to me on this website or in person.
Thank you,
Vera-Ellen

Kudos to you Vera for doing your homework...researching and asking...and most of all making the decision to go with the Dr you have security in! I wish more people would....The Dr you speak of is a very competent surgeon...but as with all surgeons...research research research! I have heard the pros and cons on many.....but you are the only one who knows who you will mesh with. Also...if that Dr is not that persons surgeon (the one offering up opinions..) don't put too much faith into their comments...its then just hear say...not personl experience. Again kudos for being your own woman and welcome to the board!!!!

Thank you Lee Ann! I am glad to be on this board and on OH. There are so many experienced voices on this list and lots of information! This was the first place the doctor sent me, plus a friend of mine advised me to come here. I've read so many interesting stories! I appreciate your support. Have a great weekend!![](http://images.obesityhelp.com/_shared/images/smiley/msn/cool3.gif)

Hey Vera-Ellen,
It was great to meet you last night. I think every experience is different. I have no bad opinions about my surgeon. He has been everything he is supposed to be. I don't have any issues at all. I only see him for checkups. He gave me the rules. My results are up to me following his rules. I do my best. I think that is exactly how it is supposed to go.
Good Luck and congrats again on your date.

Hi Becky!
It was great meeting you last night too! I don't forsee any problems with the surgeon I have chosen either. I have a doctor friend who said that the best surgeon's do not have good bedside manners, they are too involved in getting the surgery completed without problems and getting the patient healthy after surgery. She said most doctors know this, but I don't think a lot of patients know this. The choice to go with one surgeon over another is a personal decision and I applaud all of the people who have made their decision to have this surgery and who have gone through with the surgery! What a HUGE step they have taken! And now I have made the decision to have the surgery, there are still times I wonder if I will be one of those that won't succeed, or who complains a lot, or whatever. I just continue to tell myself positive things and pray for a positive outcome. I guess that is all anyone can do!
You're on your journey and doing so well! Keep up the great work! I hope to see you again and to hear about your successful progress.

It is 100% your choice to decide which surgeon is right for you. I am pretty sure that I know the surgeon that you are referring to. I met with him and two others before I made my final selection. In the end, my choice was based on a number of things and having my hand held through the process wasn't part of my equation.
I wish you all the best with your surgery and journey to improved health!

I sure appreciate your prayers and share your hope that we can meet one day soon. I start the liquid diet on Monday. I only have to do it for two days (thank goodness!). I am a peculiar combination of very scared and very excited at this point. It's odd to feel such different emotions at the same time!
I hope that this time next year, I'll be delighted with my choice to have this surgery!
Take care,
Leanne

Wow Vera I must have been in lala land at the meeting cause I didn't hear anyone say anything about any surgeons and discontent. Or I must have left and some people stay after and talked. Like LeeAnn said your the one who pays the Dr for your care and should not worry about how someone elses dicontent should affect your view.
I feel that each person has their own agenda, you are in goods so just walk away from negativity. Keep us posted and keep coming to support and stay on this OH board for wonderful group of people
Nice seeing you at the support group meeting
