Saying Hello
Hi everybody! I'm Vicki. I live in Elizabethtown, KY. I'm 39 years old, married, with two kiddos (7 & 17 years old).
I've been considering WLS for almost 9 years now. Yep, I'm a bit of a slow poke, LOL! Honestly, I just wanted to see what the long term effects of WLS would be before I committed to it. I also became pregnant during those nine years and went back to college, both of which slowed me down.
I will be attending a seminar with Dr. Shina in Charlestown, IN on the 21st. I've been following his career for the past nine years because a friend/former professor of mine had him for a surgeon. From what I've heard and read...Dr. Shina is a great surgeon and really committed to his patients being successful post-surgery. I also know about his 'directness' and that suits me just fine.
Well, I'm rambling but I just wanted to come out of lurkdom and introduce myself. I look forward to getting to know you all and to someday being on the losing bench with the post-surgery members.
Have a great evening!
Vicki

As long as u know Dr.Shina is very direct.. He is the best if you figure out how to take him.. It has taken me 19 months and lots of hand holding from Holly to get to where I know how to take him!!!
I have had some problems this month, and he and Holly both have kicked ass trying to figure out what it is!!!
So welcome to his crew!!

Hi Vicki
Welcome!
I am a Dr. Shina patient and like you am fine with his directness. Holly is great for his office and she is great at answering questions.
I would be more than willing to answer any questions I can, but I am only 6.5 weeks out.
I would recommend you go to more than one doc's seminar if you're interested. Dr. Shina was the third; no fourth I went to. I really enjoyed his seminar... he is relaxed and the area area was small enough not to feel overwhelming.
have a great day
and welcome again!!!

Hi Vicki,
I am 3 months out. My surgeon was Dr. Shina. I went to one seminar and then brought reinforcements to a 2nd seminar. That seminar was with Dr. Shina. I knew he was the right doctor for me. I like that he is direct. I think he is great. His staff is wonderful. I only have good things to say. Good luck on your journey. It took me many years to get my surgery. No regrets.

I'm a very happy patient of Dr. Shina's also. I had a friend who weighed over 500 lbs. who had this surgery almost 4 years ago now. He and his wife had researched area surgeons and their success rates, etc. and they settled on Dr. Shina. They are still convinced he is the best at what he does and they influenced me to choose Dr. Shina. I have no regrets and have never had a problem with his "bedside manner" or whatever some people have complained about. I think he's the greatest!
My friend, Johnny, has no regrets about his RNY - his was open instead of laparascopic. Mine was laparascopic. I weighed 428 lbs and am already down 100 lbs. since my December surgery. It has changed my life dramatically as it did Johnny's too. I was relieved because I thought if Johnny could do it and be so much healthier and happier I could do it too.
One thing that impressed me about my last checkup with Dr. Shina was he took time to go back through my chart and ask me about each of my co-morbidities and how I was doing with them post surgery - sleep apnea, back problems, arthritis, urinary incontinence, breathing! ...etc. He was really concerned about my total health, not just "his part" of my health. I know he cares and he was so happy for me because I had improvement in so many areas already. And I love his wife, Holly - she is a real cheerleader and a positive force in his office.
Good luck and hope I get to meet you someday at a support meeting!
Hugs,
Cindy

Hi Vicki and welcome to the board! Glad to see you posting! I think it is great that you are here and wanted to also extend the invite to the support group meetings as well! Starting them now may help answer some of your questions you have!
