How do I fight this?

Ok girls, I know I have had a ton of questions lately, but OH MY GOSH!! I am not hungry at all... still yet, I see everyone eating stuff that I use to love, and I would kill to be eating it too. I know it is all in my head, but if I could find something with some taste that I could handle it would be so much easier. I literally can't eat a bite of anything. I have been working on the same cup of SF jello since I got home seems like.
Is this ever going to get easier.. I have walked or rode 2 miles every day since the day after I got home, so it isn't that I am not working at it, yet I can't tell that I have lost a pound..
I really caught myself questioning if I had even had anything done lol. I mean I really am terrified that it isn't gonna work for me and I will be the one person that doesn't lose a pound after having gastric bypass..
Ok I know I am being crazy and I just need someone to give me a reality check. .
Also, I am very frustrated that I can't drink a darn ounce of the protein drinks, and can handle all of my vitamins minus the 2 once a days I have to chew up..
Shew.... I won't even be a week post op til tomorrow and already feel like I am failing miserably.... :(
I'll try to quit posting so darn much but no one else knows anything about what I am going through so I just turn to all of you wonderful ladies...

Take a deep breath!  I SWEAR its completely normal to feel the way you do.  Most of us went through, are going through or will go through the same thing....depending on where we are in the journey.

I had a friend that had surgery a week and a half after I did.  We talked every night on the phone.  There were nights that we contemplated the pro's and con's of licking Doritos just because we remembered the taste and saw others eating them.  We didn't.  I swear!  (we decided the spices and fat wouldn't be a good thing in our newly created stomachs) But it was such a mind game to know that we weren't hungry...yet our minds were telling us that we wanted them just because they were there.   Dr. Tom fixed our stomachs....but not our minds.

Yes, it WILL get easier.  Give it time.  You're only a week out from major surgery.  Your body is still healing and your mind is still adjusting to the new way of eating.  You're still on liquid diet.  Then comes the soft foods.  This month will test your patience....but it's essential to your healing.  Eventually you'll be able to eat normal, every day foods.  Just 'good for you' foods and in much smaller quantities than you probably ate in the past.

Just do the best you can with the water and protein drinks.  Keep sipping, sipping, sipping.  For me, I can't have anything cold or its like my stomach clenches up. Even now at 2 1/2 years out.  I do much better to have things room temperature or warm.  Try that.  Or maybe extremely cold will do better for you.  Just experiment and see what works best for you.  If its the taste that's getting you, then try a different protein mix.  Or hold your nose.....seriously!  Ask Brenda....she was the queen of getting in the protein drinks when she had her plastic surgery!

And don't worry about losing the weight....it'll come off.  Like I said...you're only a week out.  Give your body time to adjust and it'll happen.  I remember I decided to weigh myself 2 days after I got home (5 days after surgery).  I hadn't lost a pound.  Talk about being mad!!!   So I went on a 'scale strike' and didn't weigh again until I saw Dr. Tom for my first follow-up, 2 weeks post-op.   Imagine my complete suprise when I weighed in with a 30lb loss!!!!!    So just hang on....it'll happen!!

Just remember....you are NOT failing......you are healing.  I promise, everything will fall into place.  It just takes time.

Chris is right.  We all went through this.  For the 1st two months I watched Food Network, because I had lost my best friend (FOOD).  I also watched a lot of Discovery Health (obesity shows)  This helped me stay on track.  This is a hard process.  People think we took the easy way out, but this is a very difficult route.  You have about 18 - 24 months to get your head in line to get your weight off.  You need to start thinking like a thin person.

Hi
I am 6 weeks out, as of Monday, and I struggle with much of the same stuff you do.  My biggest irriatant is that NOTHING smells good.  I was one to wear purfume daily now I have not worn it in 6 weeks...it makes me gag. The smell of protein makes me gag, the smell of air fresheners make make me gag, others body odors make me gag..... and since smell and taste are so connect AND THEN throw in ketosis...NOTHING_ NOTHING tastes good.
I sturuggle daily to eat and drink.
But I know it is working. I have lost 52 pounds in 6 weeks....who wouldda thunk it??
I know that I have to keep plugging away.  The doctor told me these things are normal and they will lift in a couple of months. Just to keep on keeping on and that it will get easier!!!

Good luck to you and congrats on the surgery!

I recommend not weighing yourself at all - just do it at the doc's office for now.  You'll be shocked at how much you've lost at your first checkup.  If you're not able to eat or drink much, believe me, you'll lose!  that's great that you're exercising so much.  I am a complete failure at the exercise part.  I keep telling myself when I get under 300 lbs. I'll feel more like exercising (I have terrible arthritic knees) but I also know I'm just lazy.

We're all a little bit crazy!  LOL

Hang in there - everything gets better!

Hugs,
Cindy

Thanks for all of the responses girls.. Im doing better, still barely eating but managing to drink decaf tea every now and then..
How bad is it gonna be if i don't get the protein in for now? I really can't do it. My family keeps griping about me not drinking it, and I do slack on my vitamins sometimes, but geez.. I just can't.. I am sure it will get easier..
How much did everyone lose there first month. I bet I may lose 10 lbs.. we will see!

Jade,
I go see Dr. Sonnanstine Friday for my 2 week followup.  I am not getting anywhere near the protein in he wants.  I am getting in roughly 40 oz maybe a little more of water.  I am barely eating (sick to death of liquids, jello etc).  My husband keeps trying to get me to eat but sometimes its all I can do to get in all the vitamins and some protein.  I will let you know how the visit turns out and what he says.  I can't really see any difference in my weight either yet but who knows, we'll see Friday how much if any is gone.  Keep trying it does get a little better each day.  We'll get through it.  Big Hugs....Donna

You really need to try to get protein in - that's what helps you heal from surgery plus helps you to burn fat.  It may take awhile to get the recommended amount in, but you should be working on increasing it every day if at all possible.  If you can't get it in at all you should call your doctor.

Don't slack on the vitamins either - I have gone somedays with only half my vitamins because I forgot the second doses, but I don't recommend it.  I haven't had my lab work done yet - that's coming up in June, but I don't want to get fussed at by my doc (plus, I want to be healthy!)  My hair has been falling out steadily over the past 3 weeks - the lack of protein and the shock of surgery can cause this.  I am really trying to up my protein even more now.  My hair was thick to start with, but I can't afford to keep losing at this rate!

I lost 53 lbs. in 3 1/2 weeks - way too fast.  I ate everything I was supposed to eat and my doc wasn't happy that I had lost so quickly.  He had me have another upper GI test and upped my little meals to 6 a day - then report back in a week.  I was instructed NOT to lose more than a pound a day.  It wasn't a problem - lol - with 6 meals a day I only lost 2 lbs. the next week.  I think the first 3 weeks I lost a lot of retained fluids as well as fat.  I know I felt VERY different VERY soon after my surgery, but didn't realize how much I had lost until I went for my checkup.

Since that I have gone back to 3 meals a day and a snack if I want it and my weight loss is slower - hitting plateaus and then losing some and then hitting plateaus again and repeating it over and over.  My weight loss seems to be closer to about 10 lbs. a month now.  I'm very happy with that weight loss.  I started out at 428 lbs. so I expected to lose fast initially.  Now that I'm close to 300 lbs. I expect it will slow down.

Good luck!

Our minds are the greatest enemy we will face in this battle to take back ourselves.

My mind makes me think I can eat as fast as I used to or what I used to and when the pain of the blocked tube hits, then it gets the idea. My mind tells me that my leg pain is a good excuse not to exercise. My mind makes me forget my vitamins.

My mind needs an adjustment.

Just take things slow and don't ru****
Stick to the basics and review your phases and diet plans everyday.

You aren't going to be  failure.  We post-ops tend to want immediate gratification but remember this is just the beginning.  You are learning a new way of life that will lead to a happier and healthier you.  You will develop a new relationship with food.  You will learn to eat when your body is hungry and you will learn to "feed" your mind with other coping skills.
I made a list and it is on one of my old blogs from April 08..........it is a list of things that you can do beside eat when you aren't truly hungry!  May want to read it and then make a list of what can work for you.

Hang in there.  It gets easier!

Leslie
