I posted yesterday about eating when i am bored, now my new question is should i have the lap band or just do low carbs since that is the weight loss diet you are put on after haveing it done. A few months ago my NP said to just low carb  it cause I have type 2 I am having a really hard time making up my mind what I should do. I really want to loose weight, but do not know if I should just try to get more will power or go ahead with the lap band HELP!!!!!

This is the way I would feel...If I could get more will power I wouldn't go thru something like surgery, but, I can't get will power I wish I could. So I will be having the surgery...I am going with the duodenal switch...Dr. Husted is doing my surgery....He and is staff seem so good!!  I live in London, Ky also..It is good to see someone from London on here...There is another girl I have met from London on here...Well God Bless and I hope you the best!!

Hi there!  Dr. Husted is in Somerset, KY.  He is one of the very best DS surgeons in the world and we are very lucky to have him in KY!!!  I had my DS in Brazil (my insurance doesn't cover WLS) but I follow up in the States with Dr. Husted.  He is truly brilliant, and kind.

I chose duodenal switch because of all the weight loss surgeries, it has the best resolution of comorbidities like type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, etc., It has a 98% CURE rate for type 2.  It has the best statistics for the greatest amount of weight lost and kept off long term.  You may have seen from the boards that weight regain is a huge issue with gastric bypass AND lap band - not so with DS, because we only absorb 20% of the fat we eat, and about 60% of the protein and complex carbs we eat.  We can eat larger meals than lap band and RNY - what amounts to a normal, but smaller, meal.  Finally, for me, it had the most attractive  postop way of life with NO dieting, NO counting fat or calories, NO dumping, NO vomiting, NO foamies, NO stuff getting "stuck" and NO chewing food into mush.  The keys to DS are these few, very critically important rules:

1.  You must eat at least 90 grams of protein every day;
2.  You must take your vitamins and supplements every day;
3.  You must drink at least 64 ounces of water every day; and
4.  You must get regular lab work to make sure you are taking enough vitamins.

Most of us watch our carbs during the weight loss phase because we absorb 100% of simple carbs like sugar and it can slow the weight loss.  Most of also can't go hog wild on carbs after we reach goal, but no food is off limits in moderation, as long as we have no individual intolerance to it.  Many of us get stinky gas when we eat certain carbs, like those with white flour such as bread and pasta.  And our poop smells pretty bad. That's pretty much it. Sound too good to be true?  That's what I thought too, but the DS is the best decision I ever made!

Check out the revision forum and the failed weight loss surgery forums and you'll see there are lots of folks revising from RNY and lap band to DS.   There are NO folks revising from DS to anything else.

Check out www.dsfacts.com and www.duodenalswitch.com for more information, and hang out on the DS forum here on OH to ask any questions you have.

Congratulations and good luck!

WOW Maria!!  Love all that you wrote...I wanted to also write that I didn't mean the surgery gives you will power, I just meant that if she could have will power to lose weight herself, then, I wouldn`t have the surgery.....And yes I will be sticking around I love this site!!!  I am also glad to hear that about Dr. Husted, he seemed to be really good and knowledgeable!!!  I hope I will be on the losing bench soon!!!

that's why I went with the DS - surgery can't give you will power.  I love it and have found that it is by far easier to live with than I ever thought it would be!  It's Mother's Day and we are grilling ribeyes, asparagus and having cheesecake for dessert (trying it with splenda) - hope you stick around Shannon - would love to support you in any way we can - there are a few of us DSers in KY we get together once a month, have some dinner, share some advice and always have a good time!
I owed it to myself to research the duodenal switch before consenting to any other weight loss surgery and so do you.  Check out DSFacts.com and DuodenalSwitch.com for more information.  Remember think twice, cut once, revisions are risky and revision surgeons are rare.
