i need some information. I am 5 weeks post op and amy trying to add 1 solid food item to my meals at least 1x per day, however, I cannot eat a 1/2 cup serving of anything. I throw everything back up. Not mashed potatoes or squashed up green beans but if i try to eat small pieces of ckn or cheese, It feels like it is stuff in my chest and that prohibits me from even drinking water. I am having a hard time getting all my fluids in b/c I feel full all the time and if I try to drink then I get sick. As far as how I feel, I feel great. ....Any suggestions or what I am doing wrong?

maybe you should just stick to liquids for now, and sip your liquids slowly, really slow, ok. you have a very small pouch now, just try to keep it hydrated!! hope this helps

I am 4 months out and i remember being told only 1/4 cup of solids should be eaten at a meal.  Chicken is dense and even though I can now eat 1/2 cup of some things, dense foods are still less likely to stay down if I eat more than 1/4 cup of them.   Cottage cheese is one thing I can eat more than 1/4 cup of easily -- probably because it's more of a "slider food" for me.

I didn't have a problem with my fluids, but I've heard that small sips throughout the day (except for before and after meals - allow 1/2 hour to 1 hour between them) helps many RNY patients.  I dran**** water, iced sugar free lemonade, etc. and didn't have trouble.  Skim milk I had to only sip on though - I guess the density of the liquids even make a difference for me.  Protein drinks and milk are/were similar for me - they don't go down as fast as the more watery drinks.

I ate some chicken breast tonight - didn't measure it because I thought I would recognize when I'd had enough.  Anyway, it was kind of dry and a few minutes after I finished my last bite I realized it was too dry, too dense, maybe too much.  I tried adding some liquid to it - that was dumb!  Anyway, I upchucked it finally - to my relief- and have realized I need to make sure my proteins are more moist, and I need to measure it again!  And I thought I was past the newbie phase!  LOL  It's always a learning experience I guess.  Anyway, having gotten rid of the dry, dense chicken I am relieved.  My stomach has that pressure feeling in my chest like you're talking about and I probably won't be able to drink or eat anything for a few hours now - but that feeling will pass and it'll be alright again.

It's just like they always said - it's a learning experience - trial and error - and we're all different.  We have to find out what works and doesn't work for each of us.  I wish you luck!

Hugs,
Cindy

Hi Cindy, you know I had problems with meat at first...still can't eat reheated meats as they are to dry.  I started fixing chicken breast in a crockpot..adding a small amount of liquid such as Italian drsg or even just a small amount of water.  I also heard from a doc to try and drink something warm if you are having trouble eating..I do this quite often in the morning.  I just seem to have problems eating early.  I do a cup of Decaf tea or sugar free hot choc,  then try to eat a small amount and that seems to help as well.
If a 1/2 cut of protein bothers you..back it down to just a bite or two and see what happens..I also tried seperating my foods.  since we have to eat so often (especially in the beginning ) and can't eat much at a time.  I would take a few bites or protein first..walk away and do other things or sit and enjoy family time.  later I would eat my veggies for that 6th meal.  I just think with trying to get in protein, veggies, etc etc.  I would over fill my pouch.  I never have thrown up but goodness there are times I just want to die!!!
I still do protein drinks when I want to be very compliant and drank one every morning for 4 yrs...right now I am working on getting back to soem of those old habits as I felt they made me feel good and started my whole day out right.  So I drink the protein shakes to get the protein in I need.
Also, I just remembered.  I kept canned meats as well.  Salmon, Chicken and tuna.  I can't do mayo as  it makes me very sick...and I am lactose intolerant..but I learned to work around those things and do just fine.
it is truly trial and error..what works for one person doesn't work for another.  Drink and sip that is so important but getting your protein in is as well...for your health and keeping up your strength,...good luck!!

Thanks Brenda.  I need to get a crockpot - I threw my old one away.  In the mornings I usually drink first - take my meds and vitamins then wait about an hour and eat breakfast.  By then I'm usually fine with anything.  I don't usually have trouble with what I eat - just occasionally.  It's funny when my stomach DOES give me problems - most of the time I forget my stomach is tiny.  I have trained myself to chew everything a long time before swallowing and space my bites out.

I don't know if I'm really supposed to be eating more than 1/4 cup of protein at a sitting or not - maybe I need to go back and re-read my paperwork.  I kind of eat as much as I want of things like cottage cheese - without measuring.  I feel like it's probably alright because it slides on through and it's good for me - calcium, protein, etc.

I love the grilled chicken for Sonic salads.  I usually eat about half the salad and at least half the chicken breast.  I eat it very slowly - the lettuce and veggies must turn into liquid because I chew it so much - lol - it doens't seem to fill me up or make me uncomfortable.  I have to remind myself to stop eating the salad part - it's so good and crispy and the water content is nice since we don't drink with our meals.

I ate Wendy's Chili at every meal for several months, only because I was afraid I would throw-up.  I can't stand to throw-up.  It was warm and went down really smooth.

I love me some Wendy's chili - if I lived in a town with a Wendys I'd probably eat there every other day!  :-)

Just take it very slow.  Stick to fluids for at least 24hrs. after you throw up to give your pouch a rest then re-introduce a small amount of food the next day.

Hope you feel better soon!
