A couple questions

Hey everyone.  I am new to this journey and have a few questions.  I have KY Medicaid and I am going to the seminar next Friday the 17th at Georgetown with Dr. Sonnanstine.  A friend of mine has already had the surgery and we are going to ride together when possible.  So anyways, yesterday I went to talk to my PCP about the LapBand, because I want his full support.  I had spoke to a lady at the Bariatric center in Somerset and she gave me a list of what Medicaid requires.  So I took the list to my PCP and he went ahead and done the blood work and to our surprise I tested positive for H. pylori.  I have had no symptoms whatsoever, but he went ahead and gave me the PrevPac.  I haven't taken it yet, because I'm scared to death from all the stories I've read about it making you sick.  Has anyone here tested positive for the H. pylori and still been able to have the LapBand after being treated?

What type of forms do they require for the required diet?  Is it just a letter from your PCP, actual medical records, a simple form that they send, or what?

What are the out of pocket costs with Medicaid at Georgetown with Dr. S?

How long did it take to get all the other clearances?

How long did it take from first seminar to surgery date?

What type of anesthesia are you given for LapBand?

Any other info you'd like to share?

I'm excited and scared at the same time.  I'm excited to start losing weight and getting healthy, but scared of the surgery itself.  I'm sure I'll be fine in the long run, but I'm a worry wart lol.  Thanks.

I didn't use medicaid for my lapband my insurance paid for it but I can try to answer a few of your questions.
The only thing I needed was a letter of recommendation from my PCP.
My mom had H.pylori(found out for a gallbladder surgery not this surgery) and she said if you can sit still for about 15 minutes it cuts down on the nausea(no laying)
I'm sorry I don't know out of pocket info.
I only had to have the upper GI thing done and it was scheduled pretty quick. My mother in law had to have cardio, apnea, and one other thing (can't remember what it was) those clearances only took her about a week and a half to do.
It took me and my mother-in-law probably about 6-8 weeks from initial appointment(seminar doesn't count) to surgery date. It took my husband about 10 weeks and that was only because our insurance was being screwy.
They give versed to relax you and then I want to say they give you fentanyl and something else(if you are prone to puking after anesthesia worn them ahead of time and they will give you alternative nausea meds and it really really helps alot.

Remember to walk(helps with pain relief), a pillow to clutch to cough or sneeze or laugh with and use your recovery time to focus on you it is so important to be selfish during tis time.

This was the easiest surgery I've ever had. It literally takes about 30 minutes start to finish and the recovery was a snap. I was a little weepy though but they said it can be a side effect from the anesthesia.
You won't regret this

I wanted to jump in here before I head out the door on vacation.  I would suggest you make a list of these questions for the seminar.  As for H pylori, I ask Dr. Sonnanstine and he said that it is treatable and should not be a problem.  He will treat you for it with antibiotics and antacids.  Wait until you see him and don't worry.  He and Georgetown will take great care of you!!

I am out of here headed for Gettysburg then to see my son, very pregnant DIL (with twins girls) and my gorgeous baby granddaughter who is now 17 months. boy are they going to have their hands full..lol
anyway they are in Washington D.C. so we will spend 5 days with them, I can't wait!!!!
bye ya'all

I have chrones and my gastro doc said no to bariatric surgery.  Dr. Tom said he would do lap band but not RNY.  I have had the lap band for 2 years now and have not had any flare ups to speak of.  Dr. Tom is the best and won't do anything to harm his patients as he truly cares for all his patients.
