Drank a bit too fast... and other tid bits...

As most of you know I am the newbie here post surgically.  Well, I am attempting to bring up the protein and today took a drink with me to the Sam's Club.  I did not think I was drinking too fast, but apparently I was cause I started feeling really lousey. Stopped drinking of course.
Got the shopping done cooled off and started feeling better- came home and took my afternoon nap.

Other than that little fiasco, I am doing well.  Adjusting to life as an RNYer.  I love viactive, don't like adult chewable centrum. Walking and moving. The home health nurse came by checked me over and then removed my drain.  That was very different than expected...odd but not painful persay.

Oh, while out with mom ran into a gal I know who is like 9 months out and has lost 115 pounds. It was great for my mom to see others who are doing well.

FINALLY, talked to my father.....dun, dun, dun, duh......it all went well. He was a bit sad I did not tell him ahead of time, but was actually proud that I was doing somehting "proactive" about my weight for my health.  PHEW- that went so much better than I ever imagined. Mom called him (they have been apart, but friends since my childhood) for somehting else and she broke the ice for me. Yea Mom.  Thanks everyone for your support on this issue.

Getting use to your new body takes time. I'm still learning with mine. LOL
Try to pay attention to see if you get sick feeling after you drink other protein drinks. I don't know if you mix your protein with milk but alot of times after this surgery we can get sick from too much dairy at a time. I have learned this. If I drink over 4 oz of milk at a time I get sick. I think it is due to the sugar in it.

Glad you got your drain out ! I think i would have been able to move around much better if mine had been taken out early.

Welcome to the losers bench ! ! !

After my RNY surgery in Oct of 2008 I started to get sick from any of my protein shakes I tried many different kinds but still got sick. I called the doctor to try and figure out what was going on, he told me that probably 2 things, 1st I could have become lactose intolerant ( which happens after RNY surgery sometimes I was told) 2nd my body had created an aversion to the protein and I needed to keep trying until I found one I could tolerate. After much trial and error I found a labrada protein that I could mix with orange juice and it has worked for me.  Much of what will happen to you in the months to come will be trial and error. Just listen to your body and remember things change, taste change and nothing is set in stone. If I can help you in any way let me know. It is a big step and you should be proud of yourself for taking it and believe me you will reap the rewards of your new life after RNY many times over so hang in there through the process!

Thanks Safety Gal-
cute avi

I am trying others.  This afternoon I am going to try and sip on a glass of the unjury chicken broth protien.  Drank about 1/2 of a low carb slimfast this am as well as protien-tized oatmeal.  So, though by no means there yet I am working towards it. Today is also better for getting calcim and vitamins in too. Physically feeling good over all. Early day was awesome but around 11 got up and just plain hurt??? Now good again after a nap.
thanks for the support

Congrats on your surgery.. i just went for all of my post op lab work and xrays and stuff today so hopefully I am not too far behind you.. How long do you have to have the drain? I had one of these with my csections, and I remember it being kinda weird when it was removed too. I had lots of problems with my csection which is a different story, but I just wondered how long you have to have it?
Thanks and I look forward to all of your updates!

I had mine for just exactly one week.  I did not mind mine at all, but by Saturday I was having no real drainiage.  My doc's requirements are that you NOT be gathering more than 40 units in your drain or he will NOT remove it.
I hope that helps.
I will try to update regularly as it is helpful to get input.
Good luck with all your tests.

I'm so glad you're posting and telling us how you're doing.  I'm about 4 months out from RNY and it's amazing how much I have already forgotten about the first weeks after surgery.   I guess it's either my senior senilty showing or it's like childbirth- after you get the baby you remember less of the pain!  lol

Anyway, I'm still very happy I made this choice and I know you will be too.  The protein drinks are something I have to force myself to drink - the chicken broth unjury is one of the best I've had.  It wasn't as hot as I'd of liked it but it was drinkable and a mug of it went down pretty fast for me.

The milkshakes I'm not as crazy about - don't know if it's the milk or not at all, but the powder... the protein... it's just yucky.  I have found if I don't drink it right away and let it meld together in the fridge for a while it doesn't have the powdery taste.  I've tried doing it with a blender and ice but that just prolongs the misery for me - lol - I'd rather have it concentrated and get it down faster lol!  I ordered unjury at the beginning but recently ordered a sample bag from Bariatric Eating with lots of flavors - some are ok, some are gross.  Glad it ws possible to get sample sizes!

Good luck with your discovery and keep posting - I'll be glad to help you anytime if I can.

Hugs,
Cindy
