Brenda-
Thanks for your kind words.  As you know, I haven't made a point of being involved with the message board at all until yesterday--we've simply tried to take care of our patients in the office and operating room and let our results speak for themselves.

Recognizing the unhappiness that many have felt with the change at St. Luke, I didn't feel we could stand by and have our practice be the recipient of the posted dismay in any way.

Additionally, in fairness to St. Luke/St. E, I'm not sure all of the facts are known (I don't know them--and am glad I don't, and they aren't all likely to be posted on bulletin boards in this forum or elsewhere).  As in most situations, I suspect there is some truth and fairness issues on both sides--both with St. Luke and the other Dr. S.

Thanks again for your efforts,
Dwayne Smith, MD FACS

Well said Dr. Smith, I agree completey.  I met you almost the same time as I met Dr. Sonnanstine which has been quite awhile now.  I have never heard a bad or negative word from you.  As a matter of fact I would like to share this short story..two years ago I had some problems with plastic surgery and Dr. Tom took over me care then back to surgery the day after Christmas to remove mesh from my belly.  You saw my name on the OR board, then came to look for me just to make sure I was ok...I will not forget your kind words and concern.  Thank you!

Dr. Smith, Thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to post here.  I want to apologize to you and the other members of this forum for my earlier post.

As I am sure you have learned, many of Dr. Sonnanstine's patients are extrememly attached to him, myself certainly included.  I am guilty of posting my message with a heart chock full of emotion and of not being fair to you or the other doctors in your practice who have been thrust into this situation as well and for that I am truly sorry.  In hindsight, I wrongly and nievely went into that appointment with my mind already made up that I wasn't going to like whoever I saw because it just wasn't Dr. Tom and that was so unfair to treat you in that manner or to hold my anger against you personally.

I will certainly try to be more open minded and remember that there are two sides to the story and that I do not know the facts of the situation.  I posted to vent frustration and it was irresponsible of me to do so and meant no malice towards you or the other doctors in your practice and I apologize that I did not stop and ttake a moment to think that maybe you weren't part of the problem but part of the solution.

I greatly appreciate the fact that you were there to help me when I needed it and there was nobody else available.  Please accept my sincerest apologies for my previous post and thank you very much for helping me when I needed it.

Dear TwinmomKY-
Thank you so much for your apology--accepted.  As humans we all can have misperceptions.  What is rare is to find individuals that are enough in touch with themselves and their emotions to realize what factors may have caused them to misperceive a situation.  Rarer still, in this day and age, is someone who would take the time to say they were sorry--much less in a public forum.

On a personal basis, I am incredibly impressed with you as a fellow human being.

Warmest regards,
Dr. Smith

Dear twinmomky-
Thank you for rethinking the situation and your apology--accepted.  It is uncommon for someone to be enough in tune with their emotions to recognize where a misperception may have come from.  It is rarer still for anyone to take the time to apologize at all--much less in a public forum.

I wish you only the best and if you need help again, please let our group know.

Warmest regards,
Dr. Smith

Just an update..my Mom saw Dr Smith yesterday. Without going into details, she won't be going back if given any choice. We'll be contacting UC or Christ if a repair surgery is needed.

Now, we've never met the other two doctors, so I can't say one way or the other. All I know is the office staff is telling people he is on administrative leave and other doctors are taking over the practice.

I'm a patient and wouldn't know about this except my mom had the recent surgery. I would have appreciated a phone call, but then again, I've had a regular family doctor leave a practice I attended and wasn't told until I came in for my next appointment that she had left 2 months ago. I don't think St Luke is being mean or out of line to Dr Tom's patients, and given more time, maybe things would have gone differently.

I saw Dr. Smith yesterday (3/2/09) and found him to be very nice and confident.  I think I'm going to give the new docs a chance.  Of course I'll miss Dr. S but I have been assured that the rest of the staff is staying.

Dear Kentucky OH members-

As you may know our practice has been active in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky since 2002.  We are not affiliated with any hospital, but have staff privileges at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati and St. Elizabeth and St. Luke Hospitals in Northern Kentucky.

You may know that it takes two surgeons for a hospital to be designated Center of Excellence and I have served as the second surgeon to allow both St. Luke and Deaconess to have their initial applications approved by the SRC.

Dr. Sonnanstine has been a colleague of mine at St. Luke and our relationship has always been and is cordial.  I last spoke with him on Wed or Thursday of last week.  I was unaware of any change in his status with the hospital and his employment there until late Friday evening (other than his announced planned relocation this summer).

My partners, Dr. Carey Brown and Dr. Ryan Moon (see web site AdvancedBariatricCenter.com) have agreed to provide coverage for St. Luke Hospital as a service to patients who may have trouble adapting during this unscheduled change.

We are glad to see patients from any source in our usual office locations (Edgewood and Florence)--(859) 426 7000  and have agreed to staff the TriState Surgical Weight Loss Center during this period.

As you might expect, with agreeing to provide the increased coverage on fairly short notice, it has stretched our practice resources.  I can understand the frustration that many patients may feel with the abrupt departure of the other Dr. S.  I simply have no knowledge and hence, no ability to discuss in detail your loss.

I think you will find if you give our group a chance to work through the acute situation that  we can and do provide only the highest quality care to our patients.  (We are quite grateful to our patient who wrote the testimonial to last month's OH magazine(Jan/Feb) p. 5.

Warmest Regards,
Dwayne Smith, MD, FACS

I just heard that Dr. Tom isn't going to be at St.Luke West anymore. I am heart broken. I am not confident to see another doctor. Dr. Tom If you read this, please let Gail  and Mary Beth  from OES know where you are practicing. We are going to be one of your patients who follow you. If you are going to Georgetown, please let us know when.Gail and I are going to go to see you.I need you to be my cheerleader. I am having trouble eating now because I am so nervous. I am cancelling all my appointments until I hear where Dr. Tom is practicing
