Questions about full liquids
Everybody I need some help. I posted this same question on the nutrition forum but I didn't get any answers, so I thought I would ask it again here. Today (valentine's day) I get to start full liquids (Yeah!), here's my question on the sheet that my MD gave me it says that I can have tomato soup, but when I read the label on the tomato soup it said that it had 10 grams of sugar and that seemed awfully high to me. So my question to everyone is, is tomato soup safe or am I gonna dump? Last night I ate 1/3 of a sugar free fudge pop from Dairy Queen (mmmmm) with no negative side effects. So any advice or quidance from those of you who have already been down this road would be greatl y appreciated. Also I heard some people talking about putting spaghetti sauce on cottage cheese, and I wondered do we have to have a special type of spaghetti sauce or can we just have any old kind? Thanks guys

I am not a RNY'er but I do know that vegetable sugars and refined sugars are very different. There are 10 gms of sugar in tomato soup because of the tomatoes, not because of added cane sugar. Will you dump? I think even the RNY patients will tell you it is a very individual thing-some people dump when they look at carbs, some people tolerate just about anything.
Good Luck and I hope you get a better answer....LESLIE??????

I'm afraid to try tomatoe soup myself. I can't really help with your question because each person dumps on different things. I'd be careful if I were you. Here is a recipe I liked when i was able to move to the mushy stage.

Shelly's Baked Ricotta
8 oz of Ricotta Cheese
1/2 cup grated Parmesan
1 large Egg, beaten
1 teaspoon Italian Seasoning
salt & pepper to taste
1/2 cup Marinara Sauce
1/2 cup shredded Mozzarella Cheese
Mix ricotta cheese, parmesan, beaten egg, seasonings together and place in a oven proof dish. Pour marinara on top and top with mozzarella cheese. Bake it in the oven @ 450 for about 20-25 minutes (best) or nuke it till hot and bubbly. I usually made it first in the oven and heated the leftovers in the microwave.

Hi Becca - I am 7 weeks out and sympathize with your fear of dumping. I think you are counting 10 grams of sugar per serving, but when you only eat 1/4 cup or 2 ounces that will greatly reduce the amount of sugar you're actually eating at a sitting. If it is natural sugar and not added sugar you will probably be fine.
So far the only thing I've had trouble with (vomiting) is a piece of KFC chicken (I know, it was stupid of me) at 4 weeks out and Melba toast with hummus (it was the toast - I think it enlarged like a sponge after I age 3 tiny pieces at about 4 weeks out too. Yeah, I was experimenting. But I wouldn't call it dumping per say because although I felt nauseated for about 5 hours before I finally vomited (which was a relief!) I didn't have heart palpitations or diarrhea or some of the other horrible symptoms I've read about dumping.
So, good luck with your soup choices and enjoy!
Hugs,
Cindy
