Sometimes NSV's come at the WRONG time....
Ever have one of those NSV's (WOW moment) where you don't realize you did something until it's been done and then you just have to stop and say "hey, guess what I just did" without thinking about the time and place not really being the time to have said "hey look what I just did"?
I did just that today and oh how I wish I hadn't.
It all started when I called the hubby to tell him about finding our porch swing broken and he told me he just got off the phoe with our next door neighbor who was telling him he just ran over his own dog and needed help getting her in the truck (She's a 120 pound lab) to take to the vet.
Well, Richard obviously wasn't home to go next door to help so I went over to see what I could do. When I got over there the dog (Maddie) was obviously hurt with what looked like a crushed pelvis area. The neighbor (Rudy) had said he had been backing out to take the other 3 dogs to the vet and Maddie ran out just as he was backing out. (It turns out that she broke both femurs). While we pondered on how to get her into the car I was petting and loving on her to help calm her. We decided to try and get a blanket under her and lift her that way but since she wouldn't lay down we kind of just draped it to the side theorizing she'd lay down soon enough as she wanted her blankie when she saw it. We were waiting on Rudy's wife Karen to arrive and decide which vet to take her to and if they needed to put her down. While continuing to love on Maddie though I squatted down to get a little more comfortable due to my bad back.
And then it hit me.....
I WAS ABLE TO SQUAT DOWN WITHOUT PUTTING MY KNEES ON THE GROUND (or just bending low)
Due to the arthritis in my knees, excess weight and bad back I haven't physically been able to do this in well over 15 years.
And then I was a complete dumbass and said...."Hey, look what I just did" before I could stop myself. I felt SOOO callous!! Here is a couple who is facing putting down their 13 year old pet and I blurted out my whole "look at me" thing."

They were actually pretty cool about it as we were talking about MANY things but in my heart I just feel bad. Rudy is a double knee replacement person and he actually got excited for me knowing about my own kneee surgery.
We ended up wrapping a blanket snuggly around Maddie so she wouldn't bite when we moved her and then made her lay down on the first blanket and lifted her into the bed of the truck
Well, Maddie did need to be put down. Given her age, weight, advanced arthriitis and extent of injury they decided it was the most humane thing they could do.
I don't really feel like jumping up and down over this NSV but wanted to share it as this actually was a specific goal I had in mind that I wanted to be able to do from the beginning
Becca, I bet they were glad you gave them something for the moment besides the incident of their dog. You probably pulled the only highlight out of that afternoon. You were not callous; you used wonderful diversionary communication techniques! Anyone who knows you knows you could not have a deliberately hurtful cell in your body! You are more sensitive to the timing because of the sweet person you are.
And congrats on meeting a personal goal...regardless of the cir****tances.
Tell your neighbors I am very sorry for their loss as I have 2 labs of my own and couldn't imagine losing either...there is no better dog in my book.
