Surgery Update
Hello Everyone, I am Melisa. I am wifey to Hazen, uhm irishzen. He has asked me to come here and give you an update on his surgery that he had on Monday, January 26th. He wanted to me to start by appologizing for him not being able to give an update sooner, but cir****tances surrounding his surgery prevented me from doing so.
We just got home from the hospital yesturday evening (Saturday, January 31st). Hazen had some complications after sugery and has been sick. To start, he was fine with no problems the day of surgery, lungs were clear and heart was fine. the evening of his surgery he was having some bad issues with vomiting which we figured would probably happen as he has in the past had that reaction to anesthesia. he said he has had severe pain ever since that night.
Also, immediatly after surgery his heart rate rose and very quickly. To this day they still haven't gotten that under control and they have given us no answers as to why it is working double time. His heart rate has reached the high 150's and they were keeping an eye on that.
Second, he had developed some pnemonia in his right lung, though since after surgery he has been complaining of pain on the left side. they did another cat scan and xray friday evening and said that it had cleared up on the right side but had moved over to the left side.
I know he was extremely anxious to get home and be comfortable but now I worry that they sent him home and I have to try and monitor this so it doesn't get out of hand. I will be calling Dr. Zeeter (the sleep and lung dr.) tomorrow to get him a follow up appointment about the pnemonia.
The hospital here in Somerset is fairly close to us about 10 minutes away, but in our opinion it is not a very good hospital as we've had some problems with it in the past, and well, we now have an extremely low rating for the hospital he was at in Louisville (Norton Suburban) though it is considered a center of excellence (Hazen very much begs to differ, lol). Dr. Shina was a great doctor and kept us updated on everything but the actual staff at the hospital was horrible! we are just worried and I worry that Hazen will have second thoughts about his wl journey since he has had so many complications. he keeps saying it will all be worth it in the end and I am strongly encouraging that thought!
To top it off, NO pharmacy in Somerset had the mepergan medication that Dr. Shina prescribed him, and I was finally able to get that for him today. So, he went all yesturday without any pain meds, which was not good. he said he was in a world of hurt. I just keep joking with him and asking him if he still feels like used him as a pinata!!! LOL
He asks that everyone keep him in their thoughts and do some extra boogie dances for him!
he hopes to be up and around later this week and be able to update everyone on his own!
Thanks for reading and for the support!

I had RNY in July with Dr. Shina and I had a terrible experience with the Suburban Bariatric Staff also. You should definitely let Dr, Shina know about your experience. Also, let Connie Cohen know. Connie was a lifesaver for me!
I had complications as well and wound up in hospital two more times during the month after the surgery. Then I was sick for two months and I was miserable... but the good news is that it DID get better! I am now six 1/2 months out from surgery and I have lost 100 pounds! My comorbid conditions are gone and I am able to walk 2 miles a day!! (the first walk after the surgery was less than one block!!)
Tell your hubby to hang in there (and you hang in there too!) IT WILL BE WORTH IT!!!!

Melissa and Hazen, thoughts and prayers are with you both. I am so sorry you had to endure that and as a nurse I feel very bad my fellow professionals treated him poorly (but no, I do not work at Nortons). I know many people struggle and have big hurdles starting off, but as my boss likes to say...just like a kidney stone it will pass; painfully but it will pass
...all kidding aside take it day by day and remember we are all here for you when you need to vent, need some input or just need to hear from other that went through or are going through the same thing. Pretty soon, as he is running in the yard and trying to be a football jock again (or whatever) you won't be able to keep up with him and he will not regret his decision. The positives ahead FAR outweigh the struggles of immediate post-op!
Blessings! Sonja
