not sure anyone will post to this, i usually don't get a response but here goes!

last time i went to see my nutrionist, which was at least a year ago, i was told that i needed to stay at 800 calories a day and i find this absolutely so hard to do and have no clue how to do this right.  does anyone have any suggestions?  can anyone identify with this??

No clue how to accompli**** but I can definately identify. Unless you eat all packaged food which gives you the calories, it was always a guessing game.

I'm a bandster so I don't suppose my info will be relevant for you but I do believe the Norton's Bariatric dieticians recommend a 1200 calorie a day diet for BOTH their band and RNY patients during the weight loss phase.  It does seem that they are more liberal in their recommendations than some of the other bariatric groups though.  I can double check this tonight as I'm headed to the support group in just a short while!

I guess I'm a little dense when it comes to RNY things but I'd think given the malabsorption rate you're only retaining like 600 of the calories??  Sounds like too little to me....good thing I'm not the doc, eh?  LOL, I guess there's a reason I was so fluffy afterall!

When I'm playing by the rules I do try to stick to lean protein sources and green vegies.  I also TRY to stay away from the white carbs (flour, sugar, rice & noodles).  I do think some of those days come in at 800 calories but that would mainly be my tuna and green bean days!

I'll let ya know what I find out.

Okie dokie,

According to the dietitian that was there tonight, during the weight loss phase an person with RNY should be somewhere between 500 and 800 calories per day.

Unfortunately, I forgot to ask about the maintenance part of things.  I bet it's about the same for any WLS though in that you add calories to the point that the weight stays consistent.

Are you at maintenance yet?

Did Beth tell you 800 a day??????  I am a bandster, and Lindsey and Beth never said anything like 800, however with my food choices and band size, I stay right around there anyway.  Things I have read are more around 1000 a day and not the 800....I see her soon, I will have to ask!

actually the last time i saw Dr. Tom, he told me to keep it at 800 a day.  but that was a year ago at least.  i just find it hard to do after i add my protein supplements, which are usually like, 100 calories a scoop, you know?
i haven't seen beth in a while and i forget her email.  would you happen to have it?

I am around 1000-1200 a day....and I am maintaining my weight at that.....I actually make sure I eat enough to get that much in as I am not interested in losing any more weight.

My surgeon's office and NUT says to just count protein for now and not worry about the calories at this point.

Next month makes my 1-year mark so they may set a calorie goal for me then.

I personally think that 500-800 calories is NOT NEARLY ENOUGH for ANYONE. Especially if your doing ANY exercising...
I've always heard never to go under 1200 calories. I try to vary my calories to keep my body guessing... so one day maybe 1200... another 900... another 1400... but I usually don't go OVER 1500. But if your giving your body the same amount each day it's going to go stagnent.. ( is that a word)..LOL and hold on to that little bit of food it's getting...

just my 2 cents for what it's worth..HA!
