Surgery Dec 19 - I'm new too
I'm interested in getting to know more Louisville area people - my surgery is scheduled Dec 19 and I'm really excited. I know I dread the rough parts, but it'll be worth it. I live in south central KY right now, but I'm a Louisville native and I hope to move back to Louisville after my youngest daughter graduates from high school in May 09. I will be attending support groups in Louisville in the meantime and will try to check the Kentucky and general forums regularly.
My doctor is Mark Shina - anybody here have him for a surgeon? I was referred by an old friend from my church I attended when I lived in Louisville (21 years ago). He had great results and recommended Dr. Shina highly. I have had everything done except the vena cava filter - I am having that done as a precaution this coming Fri - Dec. 12. A week later I'll be at Suburban for the RNY - hopefully laparoscopically, although I didn't lose any weight ahead of time like I was supposed to. I'm mentally prepared for open if it comes to that.
I am going to stay in Louisville until after the Christmas holidays with my parents who live in Fern Creek - my brother lives in Louisville too, so I think I'll have lots of relatives to help out. My two daughters, 17 and 19, are in for a treat - they haven't been to any of the workshops and I don't think they really know a lot about what's getting ready to happen to me. They're so busy with WKU and high school. I know when I eventually come home to Monroe County I will need a little help from them.
My husband passed away Dec 22, 2001 and Christmas has never been the same for us since. But THIS year, THIS year is going to be different. I will be totally preoccupied with myself (lol) and getting through the rough patches and am very, very excited about the future. It's about time - I've practically eaten myself to death. Now I am looking forward to losing weight, coming HOME to Louisville and starting life all over again.
I am looking forward to meeting you guys at Suburban or downtown, whichever I get to. I know I need to go at least once a month. Who has the best meetings? LOL

Hi Cindy and Welcome to the KY board.
Congratulations on your surgery date!!!! It will be here before you know it. Can't help a lot with the Dr. or support groups for your area. I live in eastern KY and am about 3 hrs. from Louisville!
I had RNY Feb. 25, 2008 and am 9 months out. I have no regrets! It is an amazing journey and I wish you the best!

Cindy,
Welcome to the KY forum. I am also about 3 hours from Louisville. So I can't help you out with the doc or support meetings.
I had my RNY September 6, 2008. With hard work and a positive attitude the surgery is working like a charm for me. I've lost 76 lbs so far. I couldn't be happier with my results...well yes I could...and I will be when I reach my goal. I'm so excited for you Cindy, good luck on your journey.

Hi CIndy,
and congratulations on your upcoming surgery date. I'm not that far along but can relate to your excitement.
I live in Jeffersontown so we'll be neighbors for awhile when you are staying with your parents. I have gone to the support group at Surburban and would love to get together with you and go there.
Here's my home e-mail [email protected] and I'll give you my phone number and we'll make plans.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Cindy,
I live in the next county over-Barren County. Congratulations on your surgery date.
I travel to Louisville for the support groups. There is a support group in Elizabethtown but I like going back to the hospital where I had my surgery for support. I have heard a couple of my friends talking about getting a support group started in Bowling Green but nothing has happened yet. They had one going in Glasgow but the night I went only me and another lady who was getting ready to have surgery showed up. The man who ran the resource center showed up and said the lady had cancelled the meetings two days before and they didn't have time to get it in the newspaper. I have a really good friend who lives in Louisville that I visit on my trips there too. It gives us girl time.
The surgery is the best present I ever gave myself. I had lapband surgery on April 17.

Hi Cindy and welcome! In my personal opinion...come to the NORTON MEETING! You can meet me....lol...just kidding. I do not venture over to Suburban...I do well just to get to Norton's and home again. I am in Southern Indiana. I would love to meet ya though! Congrats on making the decision and working towards your new life! We are here...just ask or vent...we love either!
Hi Cindy
I am not a long time member of this board, but I am glad you are here too!! I too am using Dr. Shina. I have met with him a few times now and I really like his personality. I am really glad I picked him. I have seen and met some other WLsurgeons and I like his manner best. He shoots from the hip and is straight forward and I like that.
I am sorry you lost your husband and at this time of year is really difficult. I am glad you are having your surgery around then... you will have a positive to associate with this time. A rebirth, a new beginning. I know you are in great hands and wish you the best recovery.
The people on this board are wonderful and always willing to take the time to help you. You could not have picked a better board to join...
so, again...WELCOME!!!!
