TO ME IT REALLY ISN'T A BIG DEAL, THEY PUT A MASK ON YOU A POOF NEXT THING YOU KNOW YOU ARE WAKING UP!! I HAVE BEEN PUT UNDER LIKE 5 TIMES IN A LITTLE OVER A YEAR. THE ONLY BAD THING I THINK CAME FROM BEING PUT UNDER SO MUCH IS HAIR LOSS, THEY SAY EVERYTIME YOU ARE PUT TO SLEEP YOUR BODY IS STRESSED AND IT ISN'T GOOD FOR YOUR HAIR, I AM STARTING TO GROW NEW HAIR NOW, BUT REMEMBER I HAVE BEEN PUT UNDER 5 TIMES, FOR VENA CAVA FILTER, ENDOSCOPY, WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY, TUMOR REMOVED FROM JAW, AND A UTEREUS ABLATION.
IS THIS YOUR FIRST TIME BEING PUT TO SLEEP? ALSO THE ANETHESEOLOGIST WILL COME AND TALK TO YOU AND SEE IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, AND ASKED THEM!! SORRY I KNOW I SPELLED IT WRONG!!!
WHEN IS YOUR SURGERY? YOU MAY EVEN TALK TO YOUR DR. ABOUT YOUR FEAR, JUST REMEMBER TONS OF PEOPLE ARE PUT TO SLEEP EVERY DAY.

My fear wasn't being put under, just not waking up.  It is a normal fear, and one that you will be able to work thru, I promise.  It is something that everyone thinks about.  I don't like needles, so that was my biggest hang-up about the whole process, but I did get past it, and look at the difference 9 months has made because of the choice I made.  Good luck, and don't you just love Dr. Shina?!?! LOL  Are you coming to the support group meeting tomorrow night at Norton's downtown?  We will be there, so try to if you can, so we can meet up!
At Goal! 165 pounds gone forever! Thank you Lord!

my first fear was choosing the best surgery for me, after I made up my mind the anesthesia was my next biggest concern and remained that way until I woke up!

I wish I could tell you what would make it better.  I think the best thing to do is decide if it's worth the risk for you.  Once I made up my mind that I was going to take that risk, I was able to lay on that table and close my eyes, and roll the dice.  The odds were always in my favor.  But a risk, any risk is still scary.

Just think about why you are doing this and decide if it's worth the risk.

I owed it to myself to research the duodenal switch before consenting to any other weight loss surgery and so do you.  Check out DSFacts.com and DuodenalSwitch.com for more information.  Remember think twice, cut once, revisions are risky and revision surgeons are rare.

Sweety, I have had so many surgeries and I used to feel like you do. There is nothing to it. The important thing is to share your feelings with Dr Shina and he will make sure that in your IV he will give you a little anti-anxiety meds that will help you stay calm. Then it is just a matter of letting the meds work and you will simply go to sleep and when you wake up it will be over. Dr Shina did my sisters surgery 3 or 4 yrs ago she went from 300 to 168 and looks great.
YOU CAN DO IT!!!!Just put it in God's hands.

I was so excited to be approved for surgery, I don't  think I even thought about negative consequences.
Focus on the positives.
When they put you to sleep, it is fast and easy.  They called it my "Good Night ****tail"  and i don't remember a thing  :)

Best of luck to you.

Thanks for all the responses. I was just wondering if they give you something before they put you under. And how long does the Laproscopic GB take to do?

If Dr. Shina does it like any of my other surgeries have gone you'll be set up on an IV in the pre-op staging area (when you first arrive).  For a while they'll only run saline through it but once the doctor is in the house they typically start a ****tail that includes "happy juice"  Mine was called versed (VER-SAID) and after that you will be drunk and not have a care in the world!

Right about the time that they are ready to wheel you out of the prep area they will give you a little more juice!!

I normally don't remember even making it to the surgical suite!  One time I do remember being awake and they asked me to scoot over to the surgical table and then I remember NOTHING....next time i'm playing possum though!

My biggest fear has always been being awake when they try to intubate me!!  It's never happened yet but I'm still frightened it'll happen one day!

Waking up is the hardest thing for me since the anesthesia ALWAYS make me nauseous and vomitous...which of course you don't want to do right after they played with your tummy....this last time they got the ****tails right though and although I was nauseous I didn't vomit until later that night due to the morphine!

When you arrive make sure your prep-nurse knows how anxious you are.  She might be able to get a verbal order to start the happy juice a little early!

Good luck!

Which part?  The tube or the nausea?

I ask the anesthesiologist each now to make sure i'm asleep before the intubate me.  More times than not they laugh at me and say they always do anyway!

As far as the nausea.....PHENERGAN.....ask for it frequently.....I always asked for it about 1/2 hour before I planned to get mobile....something about getting up to walk or potty always set me off.....maybe the morphine and movement was a bad combo for me.
