Cigna - Lap-band or Gastric Bypass?? HELP
Hi everyone! I am very very interested in the Lap band procedure and/or gastric byspass...I am now working full time and will have Cigna health insurance starting October 1 2008. My policy papers show that they will cover Bariatric surgeries up to $8000 .. just wondering if anyone has used this insurance here in Ky? What procedures did you have to go through to get approved? Do you have to do the 6 month diet thing? Where did you have the surgery?
Im sure I can call the company itself and get some info, just thought I would see what input you guys could give me here. I will have the Cigna POS plan (point-of-service). I have Medicaid as secondary, but I have been told most hopsitals dont accept Medicaid. Also, Medicaid makes you go through the 6 month diet plan....
ANY HELP is greatly appreciated! THANKS

I don't have the answers you are looking for either. Call Cigna and just ask them what you need to know. That's what I had to do with BCBS, as there are so many different policies, even under the same company.
That said, just wanted to let you know that there is a new bariatric program starting up in Somerset. You are in London, and I can't imagine any other program being closer. Dr. Husted will be doing all types of bariatric surgery, including the DS (be sure to research it and him). There are also two surgeons (husband and wife) who will be doing the lapband as well.
Just wanted to make sure you knew about the new program starting up here.
Thanks,
Jill
Welcome,
I have CIGNA, I had surgery at King's Daughters in Ashland, KY. I had to do the six month pre-cert diet and see my doc and nut. to get approved. It really depends on your company. They choose what they want the insurance company to cover and at what level. It will be different for every co. The co. I work for has a PPO plan and does not have a dollar limit. KDMC is in network for me and so was my surgeon so they had to accept what the ins. co. paid. Go to your co. HR dept. or call CIGNA. Sometimes you have to be careful about what CIGNA tells you. They approved and paid for my surgery and then on a later bill told me bariatric surgery was not cover. I had to bring to their attention that the co. I worked for did cover it and that they had already paid for it. She then went back and put the approval number on the claim and ran it throught again. I think I went to CIGNA's web site and pulled up what our co's coverage and printed it off for my self. Matter of fact I think my surgeon's office did the same thing once they had my information. Oh, yeah I had Lap-RNY. I think KDMC does accept Medicaid. They are a center of exellence or what ever they call it. http://www.yourhealthylife.org/, here is the link to there surgical weight loss web site.
