Am I a wls failure?
8/25/08 Here it is almost four years since I joined obesityhelp. I weighed 324 when I first started this journey. I had my open rny surgery with Dr Shina on 3/24/05. One year later I weighed 158 and was loving life. We had a car accident 10/8/06 and I had some nerve damage in my hip. My pcp and chiro suggested ibprophen for pain. Of course, in Elizabethtown, the small town I live in, there aren't any doctors who know alot about bariatrics. I should have known better myself. I had heard throughout my wls journey that we (gbs patients) were NOT supposed to take any sort of NSAIDS but when in pain I am a huge weiner. I took them every day for more than 3 months. My stomach feels like its on fire constantly now and I have gained 70 pounds back. I'm up to 232. I feel like such a failure at this. Last night Adam said well, have u gained ALL your weight back yet? U can imagine how that made me feel. It also put things in perspective for me. I've been putting off calling Dr Shina and having the upper gi an the scope done for along time. Holly has made me several appts and I've just been to ashamed to go. I don't want to live life this way again. Sitting on my ass and thinking wow, it was nice to be thin. Wi**** was that way again. It's time I got up off my ass and did something about it. Did I fail? Well, I was well on my way to failing, yes, but I haven't and I'm not going too.
I wish those of u trying to get approved for surgery the best...
Those of you who've been approved and waiting on dates, best wishes and good luck!
Those of u like me who may have gained some, don't hesitate to call your surgeons! Get yourself back on track!

You are no failure even according to the statistics. You have kept off more than 50% of your excess weight and that is considered successful. Your surgery was successful and so are you. I can't imagine how you are feeling now that you are 70 lbs away from where you want to be but this is not the time to give up. I remember you were looking into a revision. If that is what you want keep looking. If you think you can work with what you've got, get back on track, start those protein shakes and do what worked for you in the beginning. We are here to help you in any way we can. Get back into Dr. Shina, I guarantee you that you are not the first patient he's seen with regain. He will understand.
I owed it to myself to research the duodenal switch before consenting to any other weight loss surgery and so do you. Check out DSFacts.com and DuodenalSwitch.com for more information. Remember think twice, cut once, revisions are risky and revision surgeons are rare.

I agree with what Vicki said. I think all of us who have regained, at some point feel like we are failures. It took me 4 years to decide to really get serious about getting a revision. Now, I've decided that the DS is probably the surgery I should have had to begin with, and that's what I'm trying to get.
If you haven't heard, Dr. Husted, who specializes in the DS, and has also done tons of revisions is moving to Somerset, Ky in just a couple of weeks. He is who I'm going to see.
Thanks,
Jill

you are in no way shape or form a failure!!! Its time to call and make an appt though. You need to figure out whats going on with your new stomach. I am sure you are not the first to put on some of the weight you lost...You really need to go in and see him...
