OK, everyone is different.  I have Humana insurance which required a  6 month "supervised" weight program with my PCP.  The doc said I'd probably gain 10 pounds and he wasn't far off.  Then there's meeting with the surgeon, having tests with pulmonologist, cardiologist.  Yada, yada, yada.  The worst part was miscommunication back and forth between surgeon's office and PCP office over records sent.  This delayed my surgery almost 4 months from when I originally thought it would take place.  Sometimes you wonder why in the world these people can't get it together.  Once ALL that was done, insurance approved surgery in just a few days.  The whole process took almost a year!  Don't get discouraged reading this.  I've read about some people, depending on insurance who didn't have to wait even 5 months! Has it been worth it?  Yep- had lap band a week ago tomorrow and doing very well thank you.  Research, ask questions and if you feel this is what you want, GO FOR IT!!! I wish you the very best!

Holli,  I also had to do a 6-month, doctor-supervised diet, but other than that my approval went pretty quickly.   I started exploring WLS in November, submitted an application to my surgeon's office that month, and had my first appointment in January.  That's when I learned what my insurance required, so I started the 6-month diet immediately.  When I finished it in July, I submitted all of my paperwork to my surgeon's office and got my approval 2 days later.  I met with the surgeon on August 1 and had my surgery on August 16.  That was 20 months ago.  You can read my story in my profile for more details about what pre-surgery tests I needed and how I spent my time getting ready for surgery.  It was all worth it!!    Kathy

Hi, I have BC/BS Federal and luckily didn't have to do a supervised diet.  I started my journey on 12/18 (attended the required seminar), met with my surgeon twice before surgery and had to do a lot of preliminary work (sleep apnea test, pulmonary specialist, and cardiologist).  Waited a small time for insurance to approve.  Then had my surgery on 4/2.  It actually was longer than I had hoped, but faster than the majority of people.  It just seems like forever when you are wanting to do it NOW!!!

With the 6 months  'weight loss' attempt and weight check, and all the testing, from the time of my siminar till surgery was 14 months.
