I'm 7 weeks out, and just now in the past 3 weeks been able to eat foods, I was so sick after surgery. So I have some questions now. I think I recall reading something about not eating raw fruits and veggies. But I don't recall for how long after surgery. Can I have a salad now, or eat chinese with those half cooked veggies? I think I'm eating between 1/4c and 1/2c  food most of the time, sometimes it's less then 1/4c. I was reading what people listed as eating today and wondered how much are you able to eat now? I think I read it would eventually be about 1c. Is this true? We haven't eaten out yet.  Can I do that soon do you think? My poor husband has been eating frozen and canned food since the surgery because of how sick I was, couldn't even stand the smell of foods and just started eating hot foods this week. I'd love to treat him and go out to eat. Not sure what I may want to eat though.

Hi sunflower- I just went to my seminar and I remember hearing something about not til 5 or 6 weeks out, but only if you have room after your protein.  And from the sounds of it if you are really only on week3 of food I would hold off and talk to your doc tomorrow.  After my seminar I realized just how different post op care is between different docs. I wish you all the best and wish I could help more. Good luck

Which type of WLS did you have? I'm not sure of the other surgeries but can say that for the band you want to be on solids for a little while before trying raw veggies and fruits.  Typically that would be 6 weeks give or take.  Some docs do have different criteria for diet progression.  I was told to go back to solids on day 11 which is still the liquid stage for most! My first dining out experience was Chili's at the end of week 2.  Do they have one in your area?  Maybe something similar that would have hearty soups.  I was able to eat maybe 2 o 3 grilled shrimp, maybe 1/4 cup of chili and a couple bites of double steamed (mushy) brocolli. Just be sure to try something that you know is safe on your first outing!  You don't want to get stuck (if you are LB) or dump (if you are RNY) or whatever else the other surgeries have that you should avoid.  I have gotten stuck many times at home but am ultra-cautious when eating out since I don't want to embarress myself in public!

The center I attended told us week 8 or 9 for cooked veggies.  We were told to eat you protein first then your veggies.
