what do you think is realistic weight loss with gastric bypass?   70, 80, 90% of excess weight.

I think if you follow your surgeon's and dietitian's instructions it is entirely possible to lose 100% of your excess weight.  In my case I followed doc's orders and went from 458 to 216.

I think that sounds awesome, how long did it take you? What has been the hardest part

Took a little over 7 months to lose the first 200 and the rest has come off since then.  I am currently 18 months post-op.  If you look at my profile you will see a tracker of my weight loss.  Hardest part is actually eating enough now to maintain my weight and not lose too much.

My husband weighs about what you did prior to surgery , he is finishing his 6 months with a physician. It is so exciting to think that you can really lose

Yes it has been a great ride.  Men also lose more quickly than women do.  You may want to have your husband look on the men's board here.  He can talk with other men and get info and advice relevant to men and WLS.  But be forewarned, the men's board is for men only.  Women do not receive a very warm welcome there.

It is possible.. but definitely unrealistic.. To be considered successful from what I've read/heard from people.. It's keeping off a certain percent of weight after 5 years.. I forgot the exact statistic.

My Surgeon set my goal at 70% of what i needed to lose but has revised my goal 2x since my surgery!  I am 7 months out and have gone from 268 down to 150lbs and now he says he doesnt want me to get any lower than 130 lbs.  It is very possible to lose 100% of excess weight.  The problem comes in later because some people start to go back to their bad habits.  The rule is the same for everyone.... if you put in more than you burn, you will gain weight.  Our pouch is a tool and when you dont use it correctly you can gain your weight back.  Keep that in mind and you can be successful! Good luck!!
