Hi Misty! As the others have stated this is widely debated and it all basically comes down to your personal choice to follow what your surgeon says. I didn't drink diet soda until I was beyond 6 months out. It was still a little difficult for me.. so I added it to ice and it's much easier now.. I find that once I've had my 96 oz. of water each day I don't even want a soda though.. Brenda is correct when she says you have to add extra water to make up for the soda. Personally I don't see the problem in it as long as you can handle it. Some say it stretches your pouch but nothing has ever been proven about that. Some say caffeine will cause ulcers.. I don't know about that for sure but if thats the case I'd try caffeine free.. I could ramble on and on but I'll end this 1 now.. Take Care! Katrina

My doc said diet soda is not a problem.  He said to try it and see how you handle it.  Some people will be fine with it while others will experience discomfort.  In my case I have been drinking a diet soda 4-5 times a week since I was 6 weeks post-op (am currently 18 months post-op) and have done fine.  In fact Dr. Shina did a scope on me this past August prior to my gall bladder surgery to check for ulcers and said my pouch looked perfect. As always though, follow your surgeons advice.
