I was  Diet Pepsi addict -- even changed to caffiene free pre-op -- but was told to not drink carbonated drinks -- pretty much ever again.  There are some studies that indicate it may stretch the pouch.  Other studies say it is not true.  As much as I want it -- I'm not willing to take that chance.  I do know many people do drink soda post-op.  If you MUST do caffiene free to avoid ulcers.  GOOD LUCK!

Avoid the acid type drinks.  Like sodas.  Thats where the ulcer risk is.  Some say caffiene triggers hunger to.  I dunno though. I was a diet coke freak before surgery but havent had one other then a sip since 2 days before surgery.  My surgeon said it was ok to have them as long as I let the drink sit open for a while and let the fiz die some. Im hooked to my WalMart brand sugar free crystal light type of drink.  They have many flavors but cherry is my fav.  Got tired of water all the time. Good luck!

I have become addicted to the Walmart version of Crystal Light...Peach tea is my fav...but I only get to have it once a week because of the caffeine. I always keep 2 pitchers of other flavors in my fridge...the kids drink it as well and I am all for tha! I always drink 64 ozs of water a day and put a slice of lemon in it. It makes it taste better...In the summer I like lemonade and put a couple of frozen straberries in it! I just wash them off..remove the stem and cap and freeze them on a cookie sheet. After they have been freezing for a couple of hours and are rock hard, I put them in a baggie and just pull them out as needed. It makes me feel like I am getting a "treat" without the calories! Just an idea!

Hi Misty, You ought to ask Dr. Tom at your next appt. about his policy on soft drinks.  I'd definitely get the specifics from him before giving it a try, especially since you're so new out from surgery.   I didn't try anything with carbonation until I was 7 months out from surgery.  A few sips was all it took to fill my pouch and I was very uncomfortable.   The taste wasn't nearly what I remembered it to be.  In fact, I was a Diet Coke junkie before surgery and now I can't stand the taste of it.   Personally, I stay away from carbonation.  Not only does it bother my stomach....but it keeps me from drinking the water that I need to be getting in.  Also, soft drinks have so much 'junk' in them that aren't good for us....even the diet ones.   I get Crystal Light To Go  from Walmart for a reasonable price and in a variety of flavors.  And the Walmart brand of Crystal Light has some wonderful flavors as well.  Cherry Limeade is one of my favorites!  I also like the Crystal Light Green Tea with Raspberry.....very yummy! You could also buy tea bags in different flavors that are caffeine free, brew a pitcher as iced tea.

Hi Misty..the great debate over soda..and probably one of the very few things Dr. Sonnanstine and have ever disagreed on..though it's a friendly and at times funny disagreement... He will tell you that there is absolutely no scientific proof that carbonation stretches the pouch, I of course, believe anything he tells me when it's a scientific fact!! He will also tell you to do it in "moderation"...that again is another debate he and I had in the beginning though we have pretty much closed in that gap..  for me to drink or eat something in moderation is difficult..obviously or I would have never needed WLS to begin with.  My choice was to stay away from anything that I seemed to have a problem with..Soda was one of those things.  at nearly 6 yrs out I have only tasted it once.  As was said here by others, it didn't do a thing for me..gave me a belly ache and that was the last time I even tasted the stuff.   There are people who do and will drink soda, again in moderation..if you can allow yourself once in a great while as a treat.  or a small amount a day. But we do tend to get on something we like very well and it certainly does take away from our fluid in take..Soda, iced tea..etc is not counted as part of our water intake for the day.  As a matter of fact I have a kidney problem..my urologist tells me that if I drink tea or soda..that I have to drink two times that to make up for it in fluid in take..esp tea as it is a diurtetic..for every 8ozs I have to drink 16 oz to replinish ... Remember to take into consideration your health..what does it do or is it beneficial to you health wise.   Take good care of you!  that  now is the number one objective. Brenda

I have completed stayed away from any type of soda totally for 3 years.  It is true that people who have had WLS can not normally do anything in moderation.  I drank as many as 8 Diet Cokes at work each day.  Not counting what I drank at home.  I do have some friend that let their's soda sit open for awhile, but I alway liked mine cold and fresh not flat.  I just chose not to do any type of soda.
