4 days out and I gained weight

Please help me. I am in the valley of desperation. I gained weight after surgery and it has not gone away yet. I have balance beam scales here at home and know this is a fact. I am getting all fluids in correctly and protein also was correct yesterday and will be so today. I am slowly walking 15 mins at a time, 3 times a day and have been doing this since the day after surgery. I even walk twice after surgery on Friday. I can't believe all I have gone through and I did not lose an ounce in these past 4 days but gained 10+ pounds after surgery. there was a scale outside my room at hospital so I know what I gained in fluids from surgery. My drain was removed Sunday and there has not been anymore drainage. I should have known better than go though this, I never was a weight looser.... has this ever happened to anyone else?

Honey,  This is normal, due to all the IV fluids you recieved during surgery...Trust me...the scale WILL start going backwards...Keep up the good work...it sounds like you are doing what you are supposed to do...This is the hard part....TRY TO STAY OFF THE SCALE....all it does is get you discouraged...I was one that could never lose either...now 130 pounds gone...and am 16 months post op... I know how you feel...I felt the same way, and was sure that I would be the one that it did not work for...But it does....Hang in there... Amy

The good news is that you are still swollen from surgery!  You need to hide your scale for a few days and concentrate on recupperating from the surgery.  By this weekend I bet your scale will be telling a different story!

Hey there!! Snap out of it!!!  Don't start doubting yourself or you'll really get depressed.  I am 6 wks out as of yesterday and I went through the same thing.  I came home weighing 8lb more than I did on the day of surgery.  Your body is filled to the brim with IV fluids and gas.  You're probably a little constipated too.  All that is going to weigh you down.  Get prepared for it cause you will stop losing around the 3rd or 4th week.  I went 2 wks and never lost an ounce.  I was really upset until I posted on here and got some good help from some good people.  Do as much as you can as far as exercise.  And make sure you're getting in all your fluids and protein.  Hide your scale!!!  I was weighing every day and getting more upset every day!!  I now only weigh on Monday morning.  Hang in there, it'll get better, I promise.  Keep happy thoughts.  Like how good you're going to look and feel when the weight does come off.  Before you know it, you'll be on the Loser's Bench. Dont get discouraged!  What everyone here has said is true!  I am 6 months out and down 109 lbs and i went through the same thing as you are now.  Just remember your body is in shock right now and it will all change very quickly.  Keep doing what you are doing, the weight will come off!

Please do not be discouraged. This is all normal. Our bodies are in shock. I have a love hate relationship with the scales even after a year. Last week I was 185 and this week I am 191. I did nothing wrong. SO I know it is all body water and it will all go back to normal inm a few days. In the mean time I stay on trsack and exercise. You will do great. Just know this is all normal.  Good luck and keep us posted.

Thank you so much for responding to my plea. It seems I had a bad bladder infection caused by the catheter that was lowering my spirts. The pain meds were covering up the symptoms of the infection and when they wore off I was in a miserable state. I called my regular Doctor, who was on some tropical island, and his staff jumped to the call and helped me. I have posted a reply to my plea on the Kentuky OH site.  Again, THANK YOU, Connie

Good Sunday Morning to all on this posting site! Thank you to each and every one who took the time to answer my plea. I want to take this oppotunity to update you just incase this problem should bother someone else. When I ask for help it was unknown to me (but supected) I had a blatter infection from the catther and the pain meds I was taking for surgery were covering this infection up. I don't like to take pain meds and when the meds wore off I was miserebly, down in the dumps and did not realize what was happening to my body. Once I diagonosed myself I called my regular Doctor and ask for a presription for the bladder infection.  I began to improve the next day!!!! I have lost 6 pounds since surgery 10 days ago but I had lost 30 pounds in the past 4 months preparing for surgery so my total loss is 36 pounds.  I was able to accomplish the 30 pound loss through the use of Byette injections for my diabetes. Byette is a huge help in weight loss but when it would have been taken away from me after my weight came down and diabetes was in better control I would have gained my weight loss back so I went ahead and opted for WLS.  I hope this information can help incase anyone else responds to this site in a depressed state. In my case there was an underlying infection that was not addressed my the hospital staff during my stay after I told three nurses that I felt I had a bladder infection and that I had bladder infection often.  Again, thank you to all who cared and emailed me to keep up the spirit to succeed. We are blessed to have each other to rely on!
