So I am having my surgery next Monday, and have some questions for the experts reading this.  I have my post-op testing and history and physical Thursday.  What happens during this?  What do I need to bring with me to the hospital?  Should I get anything in particular as far as food for the first few days after?  Should I eat anything in particular the day or two before?  This is my first major surgery that I have ever had.  Can anyone walk me through some of the things that will happen when I get to the hospital.  Any info would be greatly appreicated!!!!!!Jill

Jill, You will be fine.  My doctor had me on a high protein diet the week before surgery.  I don't know about your doctor but there are a lot of people who have your doctor and they will probably drop you a line or two.  I did not eat anything I only had liquids the day before surgery.  Of course I had already stopped drinking soda and beer.  I don't smoke so I didn't have to quit.  My husband drove me home from the hospital as I did not stay overnight.  I would have all my liquid foods at home like your chicken broth, liquid vitamins, gas-x strips, milk of magnesia, tums and benedryl strips.  I also had jello and my protein mixes.  I also keep a case of regular and flavored water on hand. Best wishes, Z,  Providence, KY

JIll you'll  be fine.  Dr. Tom and the staff tell you exactly what you should be eating when you come home.  If you are having questions you need to call them.  As far as what to pack.  Keep it simple.  You are not going to need much.  Make sure to bring your slippers because you will be walking and the sooner the better.  The other thing I took that helped was chap stick and I brought my own pillow.  It was my first major surgery also.  .  The days before,  I did go to my favorite resturant, Dr. Tom oked it.  But then again my surgery was over 2 years ago and things may have changed.  Make sure you get all your answers from your doctor.  Try to relax.  For me the recovery was uneventful.  I had my surgery on MOnday, home on Wednesday and I took my kids to school the following Monday.  I was on no pain medication by then.  For me the hardest part was laying down and getting up.  I know its hard but try to relax.  Hang in there.
