Picking a Surgeon??? WHo???

Anyone in the Louisville area?? I need to pick a surgeon.for Lap Band.. I'd love to know who you reccomend and why??? This is a huge decision.. and I know nothing about any of them.. Thank you.Sandi

Hi Sandinnateman,  welcome to the board. What I would suggest is come to a support group meeting and listen to the different patients talk about there surgeons. Then sign up for seminars and listen to the different surgeons talk about their views on the band.    You want a surgeon you can like and respect because thats the key to your success.    My surgeon was Dr. Mark Shina  out of suburban    other surgeons that I know do bands are  Dr. Rdriguez out of nortons downtown Dr. Allen  out of nortons downtown Dr. gellar out of suburban hosp (have dealt with personally as Dr. Shina's backup)  Dr. larson  not sure out of where Dr. tanner  not sure out of where   Also you can research surgeons here on obesity help thats what I did after Dr.Shina was suggested to me!!!   GOOD LUCK there is a support group meeting jan 24th at suburban dawn

Dr Tanner is downtown.  My friend just had her placed by him and she works at Nortons.

Dr. Larson did my band as well as my mother's.  We are planning that he will do my husband's band too.  He's out of Norton's Downtown.  He is a teaching instructor at UofL as well so my exam room usually has a student or two in there.  I like him quite a bit.  He's not overly chatty though and is out of the exam room once he's done so you have to be ready with your questions when he arrives!  My Sis used Dr's. Tanner and Larson for her RNY.  She's very happy with them althoughI think she's said that Rodriguiz is her favorite (she didn't use though him because he doesn't do closed RNY and her insurance wouldn't pay for the band so he referred he to Taner and Allen).  All of these guys are at Downtown Norton's. You may want to check into the Bariatric services over at Saint's Mary and Elizabeth too.  I have heard that their initial process is very stringent but that's actually a good thing! Good luck!

Dr. Shina was the one who did the seminar last night.. he seems very nice and personable. I'm choosing the LapBand. The room for the seminar was FULL alot of people there had procudures done and was there with a loved one or a friend considering WLS... I heard ALOT of talk about Dr. Rodriquez.. and that alot of people liked him. Thanks everyone for taking the time to post..  I really appreciate it. Sandi

 Dr. rodriguez has a few patients that com to the support groups and they like him.  Dr. Shina is my surgeon and he is very by the book.. I like that about him, I know if I do something wrong he is going to tell me about it~! His office manager Holly is the best and most of the girls I have dealt with at the office's are good too. Glenna his insurance girl is great too, she called me with updates and kept me informed!!! Dr. Shina was referrd to me by a girl at work, he did her open rny...  Good luck! dawn

Welcome to the board!! It's a hard decision deciding on a doctor huh? I know it was for me! My doctor recommended Dr. Kehdy to me he is at the grey street building, the number there is 583-8303. He is new to the practice there but that doesn't make him a bad doc. Honestly, I am so happy that I went with him because everytime I see him it's like having my own personal coach who is routing for me. He is so sweet and friendly and has a wonderful bedside manor.....time in the business has not hardened his personality or made him indifferent, he is there for you 110%! The other day I called his nurse to ask a question and the next thing I knew he was calling me on the phone, non of this going through a 3rd person, he took care of me personally. I guess we all can tell you which one is the best but the truth is you probably won't know til you actually meet them! Are you set up to go to a seminar? You can meet one or two of the doctors there so thats a start.
