I have a friend who is interested in having the Lap-Band done, but is concerned that she isn't "overweight" enough (I would love to have that problem!).  My question is, do you all know if there is a minimum BMI requirement for her to have the surgery?  Thanks! Sara

she needs to call her insurance company and ask, mine wanted a BMI of 40, some will do it with a BMI as low as 35 with comorbidities.  Also she needs to talk to her surgeon, he may have his own guidelines.

The minimum BMI posted by the LAP_BAND company is 35. They are trying to do studies on 30-34.9 but at this time 35 is the cut off. Individual insurance carriers have theirs too but no one is going under 35. Katherine

Hey Sara,  my sis Mimi had to have BMI of 35 with a comorbid???? spelling is terrible just ask my family.  She had Anthem at the time.  How are you doing.  I missed the last support.  I plan on doing this month. Jane

Thanks, Jane!  I am doing really well.  I kind of hit a wall with my weight loss but I just needed to focus more on what I was eating and that has really helped.  Hope to see you at the next meeting!
