Hey, I was just wondering if anybody that has had WLS has experienced depression after their surgery? I'm 7 months post-op and my feelings of depression are back again.. but this time full force. I have to force myself to eat... food just looks disgusting to me. I didn't know if maybe it was because of the surgery or what. I was just curious and I'm just trying to find some answers. any insight would be very helpful!! Thanks!!

Hi, Stacy, I was depressed the week after surgery but it only lasted a day or so. U should call Dr Shina's office or your pcp's office.

Hi Stacy, Yes, I started with depression after having WLS.  I couldn't understand how I could be so down when I also felt so good about losing weight, looking better, feeling better, etc.   The chemicals in the brain are a funny thing.  Add to that how much our bodies, lives, how we perceive ourselves is all changing.  It's a lot to take in.  I talked to my surgeon about how I was feeling and he prescribed Lexapro.  It has helped me quite a bit to manage my depression.....it just levels me off.   Also speaking to a therapist may be very beneficial to you as well.   Definitely talk to either your surgeon or your PCP about this. It's something that happens to some of us after surgery and is very manageable.

I have delt with depression most of my life... not many ppl that know me including family knew how bad it was until recently. I tend to put on a happy face most of the time. I wont blame my surgery for my depression getting worse. In addition to all the wonderful changes my surgery brought me... I had some major things happen afterwards unrelated to surgery. I left my husband and moved out on my own for the first time ever in my life. My marriage was over before my surgery but I didnt have enough nerve or confidence to get out before hand.  I strongly suggest you speak to your pcp about it and get it under control as soon as possible.  I would like to think I am better now but I do have my days still. If you wanna talk about it... feel free to email me anytime. [email protected] Sarah
