The ever evasive protein....

Does anyone know when G-town allows their patients to eat protein bars? I have a request out to join their board but I thought I'd ask here too. I'm starting to get worried about my protein intake, I had my bypass on July 11th. In the beginning I could stomach the shakes but the last week or so it seems that they don't want to stay down. I'm drinking very slow and have tried mixing with a variety of foods, I even mixed vanilla with frozen yogurt (along with banana or peanut butter). After 2or 3 bites I just couldn't eat it, yet I can eat yogurt or soup fine. I have vanilla, chocolate, plain unjury, and a sample package with like 20 different flavors. I really thought the unjury would be the miracle protein and I would mix it with everything, boy  was I wrong!! I'm just getting worried about my protein levels, I do NOTwant to be the hairless woman. In the Am I'll see if I have access to the G-town group and post there too. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make the protein more tasty?

I believe you have a wait until you can eat the protein bars... they take alot to handle. I ended up with the Body Fortress (Walmart) for protein powder. It is the best of any of the ones I tried.  Tuna has alot fo protein. I can't tolerate mayo so I mix in just a little mustard or sometimes ranch dressing and eat it with crackers or alone. A small can has 26 protein. Keep trying to eat small mini meals to get in the protein.  Sherryl

Every practice is different..I do know that Gtown recommends protein bars and even allows them sold at their support meetings at the Scott County Library.  However, I have no idea how far out they want you to be.  I will shoot an email to their office and I am sure someone there will answer this question. I just chedked and do have the email address for Ciara, the dietician at Gtown, shoot her an email and ask her for advice..You are not very far out so she needs to work with you on the types of protein..a little further out and you will be able to experiment and even tolerate some of the samples you have.  You will see most post-ops say, don't waste your money on protein in the beginning..your taste will change so much..I ended up with tons of stuff I couldn't' tolerate.  and finally found one at GNC I did it for about 2 yrs..then tried different things.   here is her email address

I was in the same boat! I really like the Profect vials though. Like someone else mentioned they are 3 oz with 20+ grams of protein. They remind me of Jello before it sets. Not too bad tasting at all! And it takes not time to get one down. These were my life savers when nothing else wanted to stay down!

As Brenda stated, please email Ciara Halpin, the Bariatric Dietician for assistance. [email protected] She can help you troubleshoot and make some suggestions as we don;' want to confuse other program patients with our instructions, which are unique to our program requirements. Thanks! Cathi Roskind,RN Bariatric Education/Support Coordinator  The Bariatric Center at Georgetown
