Thanks for the post Annie,....I wish they would have given more detail but I suppose it would take an entire book to explain the deficiencies, etc.   The most important thing to remember it prevention is the most important thing...and this article even stated that many of the folks having problems were those not told about supplementing in the first place. That's the reason it's so important to not miss your doc appt's..have your surgeons office doing your blood work..as they may not know all of the deficiencies out there.. Bottom Line, take a good vitamin..I prefer the ones made specifically for bariatric patients.

You are most welcome. Anything I can find that encourages the discussion of the disease of obesity I'll post.  Pro or con.  I would like to see a book of deficiencies published that leaned more toward bariatric nutrition. I don't understand all the inguiries out there on basic things that our surgeon has went over time and again with us.  Shows we have the best surgeon looking out for us.   I looked at the chewable children's vitamin verses the prenatal and except for a decrease in iron and folic acid, there was not much difference in daily amounts.  How do the special bariatric vitamins differ from ordinary ones?  And where do you get yours? Thanks again for all the information.

I do a lot of patient education...I go in and out of several centers in the greater Cincy area.   I have a book I love called Micronutrition by Jacqueline Jacques, ND. she is the cheif science officer for Life Sciences (Bariatric Advantage) her work is studying and gathering information about WLS patients .. I think you can purchase the book at www.bariatricadvantage.com that's where I get my vitamins

My husband emailed me this article too!  He asked if I was taking everything that I needed. LOL He is too funny.  Reminds me of the time he was in the bathroom with nothing to read and started reading everything under the counter. When he was finished with his business he came to me with the tampon box and wanted to know if I had talked to all the girls (we have 5) about toxic shock and the signs!  OMG!  I thought the girls were going to choke at dinner when he brought the subject up again! So, take your vitamins and supplements everyone and ladies..... remember to brush up on toxic shock signs!

That's funny!  My husband and I had a one boy so if he came out with a tampon box I would have thought he lost his mind.  He won't even touch a box of them in the store. LOL   WE ALL KNOW NOW TO TAKE OUR SUPPLEMENTS!!

Problem with the Bariatric Advantage vitamins is the cost as they are quite expensive. Our patients do very well with the less expensive over the counter ones and they get an extensive list of specific ones needed depedning on their procedure type.  A big problem with childrens chewables is that they do not contain Vitamin K which explains why patients 4 years ago were brusing with every little bump. We want our patients compliant with their vitamins so we found some over the counter, less expensive chewables and keep a close eye on their labs.  I explain to the patients that a gstric bypass who doesn;t take their vitamins is like a diabetic who doesn't take their insulin. It can lead to brain damage, heart failure and even death with certain vitamins. The vitamin book by Dr. Jacques is very good reading and she is the vitamin expert and is or used to wrok with Bariatric Advantage. Keep in mind the Bariatric labeled vitamins come with a bigger price tag and that's the only disadvantage I see. Cathi Roskind,RN

Thanks for the headsup on the supplements Cathi.  I'm wondering why some of the surgeon's recommend buying the children's chewables though.   And what about those blood thinning injections we use after surgery?    Do those interact with or counteract with the missing Vitamin K in children's chewables?  I'm comparing dosages on each.
