Mortality Rates By Hospital/Surgeon?
Oh heck, Amy...nobody is questioning you don't get me wrong...I am questioning if someone is killed within 30 days of surgery in an accident thing..but who am I???
the doc who told you that could be right, I have sent an email off to see if I can find out who sets the mortality rate and whether or not that is true..could very well be.
I will let you know when I know.
thanks
Brenda

ok here is what I got back...if you have a heart attack within 30 days..it counts, even if it was unrelated to the surgery..but not a car accident or any other accidental deat including suicide..etc.
.and it's the Center of Excellence who keeps scores...also -lets say you never left the hospital after the original surgery for months then die..that of course counts.
I also heard that Georgetown had 2 fatalities with by pass---one from a leak and one from a blood clot(which can happen with any surgery). I am scheduled to have surgery at Georgetown on 11-09-06 (lap-band). I have a friend who works at St. Joes as a nurse and she said the complications from gastric by pass there are numerous and said she would be terrified of having it there and cannot believe how good the numbers are at Georgtown. This is only heresay from her however. Hope I could help.

Hi, I had surgery Jan. 14,2005 and Dr. Nighbert was my Doctor. I was told two people had died. One had a heart attack about a month out and I can't remember about the second one. I heard only good things about St. Joseph hospital and had very good results. Dr. Nighbert is a very good Doctor but he doesn't sugar coat anything. He wants you to know the surgery has risks going in. The seminars are very helpful. I think a lot of times it's just people talking about the bad stuff. Becca
