Mortality Rates By Hospital/Surgeon?
I have searched the Internet for days looking for the mortality rate of the various hospitals and/or surgeons. I can't find anything stating these statistics. I attended an informational seminar at the Bariatric Center at Georgetown Community Hospital and was told that there had been only two deaths at their facility. How about the Center For Weight Loss Surgery at Saint Joseph - East? Does anyone know? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I asked Dr Nighbert about the deaths before my surgery. He said there had been 3.
If anyone dies in 30 days after the surgery it has to be counted. One died in a car wreck and I cant remember what he said happened to the other two, but if they had died having surgery I wouldnt have had it. Whatever his answer was it didnt scare me.
Seems like one died having the surgery but had bad health problems and was a risk anyways.
My surgery was June 6 2006. Nov 6th I will be 5 months out. I did have a problem with throwing up, I had a stricture, now I have a hernia. Dr Nighbert wants me to lose 100 pounds before he fixes that. I have lost 72. If I start having bad problems with it he would go ahead and do it now.
I believe St Joe East is a good hospital, you are treated very well. The Dr's are great also. My sister and my neice have had surgery there as well. Both of them are doing great. During the time I was throwing up I decited I didnt like Dr Nighbert. Now I am back to liking him again, since I dont vomit everyday in fact I dont vomit at all. Sometimes I try foods that dont sit well with my pouch but I am careful with what I eat.
Hope this helps

Personally I have never heard that if a patient is "killed" within 30 days it has to be counted..that's a new one on me.
Patients do die from time to time and it's a terrible thing when it happens. I know that each facility talks about the high risk of this surgery. But remember, there is a risk each time someone under goes anesthesia, you could die having a toe nail ...
I felt the risk was worth the results, as scary as that may seem.
I also know that surgeons as well as the OR staff, anesthesiologist do all that is in their power to keep each patient safe.
I cannot speak for St. Joe but I have been in surgery with Dr. Weiss and Dr. Oldham at Georgetown, as well as a few others and each time I see the pains that are taken to keep each patient safe from mistakes as well as infection.
I am sure the same is done at St. Joe....While deaths happen, I hear the ratio is something like 1 in 200...most are not always directly related to the actual procedure but are normally a secondary complication, like heart or lungs. And again, remember many patients are in bad shape in that area to begin with. Other reasons can be due to blood clots. etc. Leaks do occur but again so many precautions are taken to prevent that such as leak test and a product called peri-strips which are used along with the staples to give stronger and leak free staple line. I am not sure what facilities use these as again I only went in with the G-town docs and was privileged enough to watch them use it for the first time.
My point is surgeons are constantly striving to change that mortality rate..so what may have been so years ago is very different today.
you are doing the right thing in asking questions and seeking information.
Good luck with your search!!
