I had to go lastnight to have the CPAP test and I slept about an hour with it on and couldnt stand it any longer. I was wondering if this has happend to anyone and what will they do now about my surgery and not being able to wear it? Thanks all, this is my favorite site on the web and I really enjoy reading everyones stories , it helps so much to have friends like you all.

Hey there Amanda, I too had a sleep study done and they wanted me to come back to wear a CPAP. Unfortunately, my insurance at the time (UK-HMO) wouldn't cover it, so they just sent me home with an automatic one with a humidifier. My impression is that this will help your case, not harm it. I was afraid when I took my test, and with the results coming back with such critical alarms, that would diminished my need for surgery. I've been told differently by the WLS-center that it indeed enhances my chances for approval. What type of mask did you try and wear? I believe there are two-types of masks that you can wear, one that fits over your mouth and nose and another (the kind I wear) that sits inside your nostrils. I like this mask, but be sure to get a chin strap, because if your mouth opens during your sleep cycle, as does mine, I am jolted awake from the suction between my mouth and sinus's. Good luck to you and I pray you success all the way around!-- Dee

Deanne, This was my 2nd sleep study , the 1st one came back bad and so I had to go have anotherone with the cpap to try and see what level of air I would need for surgery, and to sleep with at night. The lady that done my sleep study said that I had to beable to sleep with it in order for them to know the preasure that I would need. And the sleep study Dr. said that he wouldnt release me for surgery until I had this new study and since I couldnt do it I was wondering what would happen now.

I didn't realize that it was the sleep study Dr. that was the one possibly keeping you from your surgery. What type of mask did you wear? Was it the face mask or nostril one? I use the nostril one and it's not terribly bad as what I've seen the mask to be. I have heard a lot of people really hating the CPAP's masks at first, but continute to work with them and eventually find a comfort level with them. Some even go on about how they don't know how they did without it. I am not trying to minimize your situation, but was wondering if you could try to wear it say an hour for a nap or just while watching the television and increase the time as you become more comfortable with it. I am sorry you are having a difficult time of it--hang in there and be well! Dee

I tried to use the nasle one and couldnt, since I breath from my mouth most of the time, so they let me use the face one and I done a little better with it. Thats how I got through an hour.

I had a sleep study done about 2.5 years ago. I was sent home with a CPAP, but I have not used it one night. As you can see, I'm post-op. I would imagine it depends on what your doc and the sleep specialist decide between themselves...

I tried to use a CPAP twice and could not tolerate it either time. I use a TAP appliance now that seems to work fine for me. It is an appliance that you wear like a retainer. It holds the jaw out so it doesn't close off my airway. Different apneas for different people I suppose. It was made for me by Dr. Pape in Shively, KY. For me it works better. I would be waken up by the CPAP as much as by the apnea. Dr. Pape is located at two locations in the Louisville area, one is at the St. Helen's Dental Bldg. on Dixie Hwy. The other is on Preston I think. Good luck! Anna
