Hi! I am hoping this isn't too dumb of a question, but I was recently talking to a lady that had Lap RNY about six months ago and she said that when it came time for her to have plastic surgery, that there is a burn unit in a hospital somewhere that will do the tummy tucks, etc for free just to get the extra skin to be used in their burn unit. Does this sound right or familiar to anyone? I have NEVER heard of such a thing or I am wondering if she was just fooling me?

Hi Kathy, My plastic surgeon is Dr. Kurtis Martin in Cincinnati, he is an associate professor at UC and is on staff at the Shriners Burns institue here. He was ask that question at a meeting, he told the group that they cannot use our skin due to the fact it is so stretched, ....I believe if that were a true statement that he would be the one to know..I am not saying that some other place won't use it, I just know the Burns institute does not.. If anyone knows a "fact" to the contrary please let us know!! Brenda

I was told originally some was done, but our skin has been abused by the stretching and because of the infection risk no one does it that i know of....

I don't know, but if you find out, let me know. That sounds interesting. I was talking to someone recently and I said, it's a shame to throw all that skin away when people who have been burned might need it. I would be willing to donate my skin to help a burn victim!! Not to mention the savings....that would be great too!
