Weight loss/weight gain...
I'm up a pound from what I was three days ago. Why do I know this? Because I was updating my profile and saw I posted my wt on the 21 and then this morning I was a pound heavier. I'm not eating much at all. I've been working like a dog helping my daughter pack and cleaning house (as in cleaning out cabinets and stuff) getting ready for me and hubby to have the house to ourselves again. I'm drinking my fluids, getting in my protein and all that.
HOWEVER, Saturday and Sunday it seemed like I could not get enough food to satisfy my cravings. For DAYS I'd craved (and eaten) dill pickles. I only ate one a night, those HUGE ones. But Saturday I craved the pickle, had one, craved chocolate chip, chunk cookie. I fought the urge for a long time but then gave in. THEN I wanted another pickle and I did indulge yet again. I wonder if the dill pickles are bad for us? The cookies are GONE now. For the record, they were NOT mine, my daughter got them for my granddaughter. Surely that cookie and the pickles wouldn't make me gain weight and not have any loss whatever in three days.
I've read where many people are close to the same weight loss as I am who had their surgeries near same time as I but my doctor and his staff were NOT pleased with my progress thus far. Other than eating that cookie, I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'm doing the protein, the vitamins, the ewww.. calcium, Iron, liquids and so on. Any advice would be appreciated. Please don't fuss about me about the cookie. I know I shouldn't have... I won't again. I won't be buying them for myself and dh is diabetic so there won't be any reason for "illegal" foods to be in our house again.

Hi Gale
First let me say there is no fussing about legal and illegal foods, you had your WLS surgery so the rest is up to you. Although I do have to say I am surprised you could eat it and not get sick...you had RNY, right?
Anyway, first suggestion I would make is to put those scales away!!! what is the old saying..a watched pot never boils???
and why do I tell you this?? guess who went through the same thing, I weighed myself all day long then got upset if I hadn't lost weight since the last weigh in 2 hrs. before!! I ended up pushing my scales way up under the bed in the guest room where they were not seen every time I walk in the bathroom!!
the weight started dropping off and it will for you too. I would suggest staying off the pickles and any sugars until you are down to the size you are happy with..Once you are on maintenance you will be eating those things in very small moderate amounts..IF you can handle it. There are certain foods I still have problems with and I just stay away from them. I have yet to taste a carbonated beverage since WLS..it's been 3 yrs. I had a definate weakness for that and bread, since I was very aware of it those are things I never touched during the weight loss phase. I do have bread on occasion now but I am maintaining..when I have had small weight gains that exactly the reason..I get off the carbs and the weight drops. If you feel you are stuck and can't get kick started again, try writing down everything you stick in your mouth..it's funny how I never count the one bite of this or that I take..
You will do just fine, its' all about lifestyle change so it does take some discipline, I tell everyone to be very aware of their mind and body..live and learnwith your new tool..it doesn't happen over night. But I will say you get out of it what you put into it..
I also suggest to folks struggling to try something like the Atkins diet for two weeks..just two weeks. Eat all the meats and cheese you want. If you need a snack, grab and cheese stick. I lost 120 lbs in 10 months low carbing it..

Thanks girls. Those cookies are gone. You see, my daughter and her two girls (one just a baby though) live with us and I told her before she moved in last December, NO JUNK FOOD in the house because I was working on losing back then as well. That rule took no time to break. She's moving out now and there will be NO MORE sweets in this house. My husband is diabetic so it won't bother him to not have it here either.
As far as the pickles, I looked at the carbs and thought that would be a good craving to give in to. My husband bought the economy jar. They will leave here today. I feel pretty ignorant about nutrition right now. I used to think I knew a little about it here and there... but I mainly watched the "fat" content when I lost the weight before. But like many people, I cheated one time too many and just stopped and regained my weight.
I WILL make these changes. Nothing but meat, cheese and eggs. I am getting rather tired of eggs for breakfast though.
I had thought about deviled eggs but now think I better not because I use relish and mayonaise in them. I will get the hang of this.
Brenda I surely appreciate your information. Sometimes we think we're not doing so badly but then we get someone who "enlightens" us and we see just how badly some things are that we're doing. I have plenty of sf jello, some sf pudding, and will get more sf popsicles. I've thought about doing more of the broth too as it was quite tasty and will help me get my fluids in without struggling with the water. I hate that it makes me sick so much because that is my drink of choice, but in the meantime, I think broth will help.
I'll check out the website you suggested too. I'm just getting two different ideas of what I can and can not eat from the clinic, depending on who I speak with and just can't figure this out by myself. I did eat some green beans and collard greens too because I thought they are good for us and very low carb. THose are now off the list for me until... well, I don't know how long. I will check in HERE before eating them again. AND, if I have a question about a certain food, I'll check with my friends here or the website you gave me. I don't want to derail what I've done to lose this weight and I surely don't want to gain it back once I get to goal.
I know a HUGE part of it is my mind. It's like a battle in there when I get these cravings. My thoughts are... "I'm getting ready to start my period and this will go away once it arrives". "One time won't hurt". "I have to eat it or I'll start eating everything else"... and so on. I have to figure out a way to overcome those destructive thoughts. With what I've read this morning in my e-mail and on this board, I think it might have given me a little insight into what I'm doing to myself.
Thanks again ladies.

My suggestion of the low carb thing is to do it strict for two weeks just to get you back on track, I don't see a thing wrong with green beans or collard greens. This time of year I eat the heck out of those things with so many fresh veggies. I just got a book with carb, and calorie count..I stayed with low veggies..
I always eat meat first, if there is room then I will eat my veggies or have them later alone for an evening snack..how good is a bowl of fresh green beans about 8pm..yumm yumm
besides look at all those vitamins. What I do suggest is staying away from breads and sugars..those things will not only sabotage your weight loss but will also sabotage your mental fight with food hunger and cravings.
Once you get use to doing this more toward the low carb, things will happen easily..I was 3 months out a pretty lost when I met this young girl named Jennifer, she was a year out of surgery and had lost nearly 200 lbs..she has since lost 240 and is at goal, this girl is gorgeous..when I started hanging out with her I started seeing all the things I am pointing out here..she was low carbing things and lost so quickly. While at dinner the first time she had baked fish and steamed veggies while I had a piece of chicken (that's good) but a bowl of potato soup..I have learned since then I was relying heavily on carbs because it was easy to eat..(mashed potatoes, baked potato)
one other suggeston, broth is kinda ok..though as far out as you are right now you need to concentrate on learning to "eat" and not depending on soups or broth to get you through, experiment with different things but as you try something new, eat it alone for the first time..otherwise if you get sick you won't have a clue what made you dump...also eat small amounts then wait a few minutes, if you are going to get sick it won't be as bad..
I still have problems with breakfast as I don't eat well in the AM..I do a protein shake every AM..I also eat bacon cut up small in a scrambled egg beater..my friend Jen fixes quiche with meats and cheeses..the cookbook is a great idea and will give you lots of things to choose from.
As for the water...I found out I can't drin**** water but I do fine room temp..try it different ways and see what happens, crystal light is a good source to use..also try the new "water sensations" it's something you add to the water for taste.. Iced tea is ok for a treat but is a natual diuretic so something I dont' use to get my water in...
hope this all helps and email me anytime if I can help!!

lol, I saw your ? on the other board about could I be drinking too fast. Only once I truly gulped. I had totally and completely forgotten. I was SO thirsty, turned the bottle up, guzzled down two HUGE drinks and had the third in my mouth when I remembered I'd had gastric bypass surgery. It scared me a bit because I didn't know what to expect. I suffered for it but not terribly bad. I just don't do it any more.
I've tried ice water, room temp water, luke warm water... sipping and taking small, normal-sized swallows and it still makes me sick. Thing is, I never know which time will make me sick and which time won't. There's nothing inparticular that I am doing on the occasions I get sick or the times I don't. I just drink it and within seconds I'm either sick or I'm not. I don't throw up or anything but I do get very ill, weak and at times, I feel like I'm going to pass out. Yesterday I just laid my head on the steering wheel next to the ac vent and within a few minutes, it passed.
As far as those food items, I don't "dump". At least I don't think I do. I have been sick enough that I've been in the bed for up to an hour but then it passes. That's not often as I remember what did it to me and avoid it the second time around. I really am not having much problem with food. That's why it's been so easy to eat things I shouldn't. I won't do it again. I'm giving my daughter what sugar I have in the house and all my white stuff, like the flour. I've already cleaned out my cabinets and gotten rid of ALL pasta (except the ww which will be leaving too now), all anything that I think is something I shouldn't be eating. I do have two graham cracker crusts in there I was going to do sf pudding pies in and just eat tiny piece of (to keep the carbs down) but will give those to her too now after reading the information I've been given today. I am going to be as strict as anyone has been.

I was stuck @ the same weight for 2 weeks & it drove me crazy. I weigh every Sat. I did all the water, protein, & vitamins but couldn't loose any then I started replaying my week. Yes I was good all week EXCEPT I ate chips. Granted they were SunChips but over the week I ate 1/2 the bag by myself! So now I don't buy them. You've only been out for a month & you're learning what works for your body or what doesn't. Don't beat yourself up for it. I bet you'll loose 2 lbs this week!!!
